What is the best tool to use for pushing the Takedown Pin ? Bushmaster sells that multi-purpose tool, which I am debating on getting, but wanted to check with the experts here first.

Sorry if this is a basic question, but I am new to the AR world. Just want to make sure I have the best equipment for disassembly and thorough cleaning.

I will say that stripping a Saiga or any AK seems much easier!

Thanks.

which takedown pin? the front or back? if its the front one... its gonna be a PITA to remove.. but the rear one.. just take off the stock being careful of the takedown detent spring... take out the detent and remove the takedown pin...

Both. The rear takedown and the front pivot pin.

Looks easy in the manual!!!

The rear should push in flush with pressure from your thumb, then pull out from other side with fingers....detent will hold it from falling all the way out.
The front....you'll need a brass or nylon flat point punch and a hammer to knock it out....

oh I misread his question.. just for PUSHING it? I read the part about thorough disassembly and thought you wanted to remove it for like.. refinishing purposes or something...

lol.. I'm sorry.. I didn't mean to steer you in that direction... try a pen cap from a BIC pen... use the small end and push :)... high quality tool!

Thanks for the replies.

I really wasn't clear in what I had wanted to to as far as disassembly. Sorry for any confusion

i find that the tip of a 223 round works great for pushing the pins out.

I got one of these. ITs a Delrin punch for the push pins so it dosent mar them up.http://cmmginc.secure-mall.com/shop/images/120.jpg

Heres the link to buy it:
CMMG Tool Page (http://cmmginc.secure-mall.com/shop/index.php?shop=1&cart=104223&cat=19&)

Now if your talking about removing the push pins, I use a thumb tack with the plastic handle to push the detent in on the front pivot pin. You can get em at Wal Mart.
