I have learned a great many things about guns on this board. I have learned all about the PSL AK and the AR. Now I'm looking to buy a .308 for hunting and accurate target shooting and my potential chioces are the:
Remington 700 PSS in .308 or
Savage Model 10FP-LE2 in .308
http://www.savagearms.com/10fple2.htm
The Remington seems overpriced and I am leaning toward the Savage but I have some questions.
1-Is the accutrigger really that good?
2-What exactly does "Drilled and tapped for scope mounts" mean? *Insert laughter here* Every rifle I have owned so far (PSL, AK, AR) has has a rail of some sort to mount the scope, this "Drilled and tapped for scope mounts" is new to me. Does it mean I have to loctite screws into the gun itself or......I don't have a clue.
3-Where do I get the really good/reasonably priced parts needed to mount a scope on this gun?
4-I'm getting another Nikon 3-9x40mm scope for this gun, it's $150 at WalMart and has a lifetime warranty. Any alternate suggestions on the scope choice?
My brother-in-law purchased a Savage package .308 and the barrell was loose right out of the box, kinda scary.
Thanks in advance guys

Drilled and tapped
Example my S&W 629 Classic is drilled and tapped for scope mounts from the factory, and just need the correct base, rings, and scope...
Most hunting rifles and handguns are drilled and tapped for scope mounts...

What you will need to mount a scope on a drilled and tapped rifle are; a base that will fit your rifle, I reccomend a Weaver type base, it will come with screws. You will also need rings that will fit the base, make sure the rings will fit a weaver style base the package will say so, again the rings will come with screw's. If you get a 1" scope make sure you get 1" rings. The mounting is pretty stright forward. I have always got mine at Walmart. ;)

No laughter, drilled and tapped means just what it says. Holes have been drilled and tapped on the top of the action...to alow scope bases to be securely attached. As to the Savage, the only one I ever owned was a older 110...not the package. It was deadly accurate.....trigger was the pits.
Depends on what you want to spend, for me, I'd look at an older Rem 700 or a pre 64 mod 70.
Last 308 I bought was a M70 Featherweight with a BALvar 8 attached.....$500

isnake, the Savage is an excellent choice, especially when you consider price/value. I haven't had any direct experience with the accutrigger but I would guess it's a vast improvement over their standard trigger. You can go to http://www.charm.net/~kmarsh/mounts.html for information on scope mounting. I would agree with Rew, stay with Weaver-style bases. You mentioned a Nikon scope. Do you remember the specific model? If you want to compare prices & models of different scopes & mounts try visiting http://www.swfa.com/ to see what's available. Hope this helps!

Now that is a page w/a lot of info, good link man. The Nikon is a 3-9x40 Prostaff and I guess a little out of place on my AR, but I can't match my clothes properly either. I was "Mr. Gotta have an ACOG" for the AR until I saw the $850 tag and decided I could buy a whole other gun w/ammo for that cash. My FFL is saying $489 out the door for the Savage, I think it's the winner.

I'm thinking of getting a Remmington 700 SPS in .270 Win for hunting deer in SC. You can get those at Wal-Mart here for about $440. I haven't looked at Savage. What's a comparable Savage model?
Thanks for the scope links. I've been considering a Bushnell Elite 3-9x40. Anybody have any experience with those?

NoGods, probably the Savage Model 111F (pictured above) is most similar the the Remington Model 700 SPS. Both are good rifles. My guess is you'll be able to find the Savage at a lower price. Either are reliable & accurate. It will just boil down to your personal preference.

Aw geez, where do I begin? I got sidetracked w/this shotgun thing. I never had one but when I bought my Winchester 1300 I fell in love. Now I have this Remington 870, 18.5'', side saddle, weaver rail up top, all evil black, and a 40x1 red dot that is EXACTLY on at 25yds, no left, no right, right on the money. I think a shotgun slug is about +/- 400 grains.....how can you beat the bang for the buck? 200 rds at the show of 00/buck and 200 1/oz slugs and you have everything for a good price...or....a natural catastrophie....a riot...you name it, the shotgun has you covered.
Currently enamored w/shotguns!
