Why is it your favorite? Is it the history behind the weapon, its accuracy, the caliber?

I would like to know!

Definatly the 6.5x55 sweed. That is the flatiest shooting round ever I took mine out of the box and was nailing targets at 300 yards with iron sights.

I think the Enfield action is the quickest I've ever encountered to date on a bolt action rifle. I love 'em!

I love the enfield for it's short and sweet bolt throw and it's antique charm. I love the 1903 Springfield for it's oh so easy to use sights and the availability of .30/06. I love the Mosin-Nagants for the memory of all the poor communist and otherwise bastards who carried one to defend whatever creed was popular at the time. I love the swedes for their accuracy and their old world workmanship. I love the K-98 for it's practicality, which displays itself every time I raise it to my shoulder. Get one of each, like I did, so you dont have to choose favorites!

That said, the Swedish rifles are exquisite. :D

Would have to be my1903 Springfield. The .30-06 is easy to get and the gun just works great. Very accurate at long range.

Second would have to be my K98 German Mauser. Reliable and a good shooter. Not the best but a general workhorse.

Got a K98 in 7x57 made by FN for Venezuela. The wood's ugly as hell, but the metal and finish are in decent shape. The thing really surprised me how good it shoots. Its probably my favorite bolt I have, but I still love my Enfield and my Mosins (both the M-44 and the 91-30).

My Mosin Nagant 91/59, its accurate, being a carbine it handles well, and doesn't have a bayonet stuck to the side. Enfields are better rifles, but there is certain something about this gun that I like.

:D :D :D This hopefully will be a permenate department:) . I just read how to get a C&R license by REDSTAR, thank you REDSTAR, your information was more than adaquate. Now, I can buy more of my favorite weapons BOLT ACTION RIFLES!!!! I STILL LOVE my AK's but the feel and romance of a bolt gun is hard to beat. This thread is a tough one, I own all the rifles mentioned, except the Turk. All these rifles shoot extremely well, and are very reliable. This is difficult for me to pick one, but it would be the Lee Enfield British .303's. My crown jewel, is an all numbers match perfect condition 1945 #5 Jungle Carbine. I do not have any pics to post, do not know how! But I am working on it. This rifle came with a bayonette. I do not belive the bayo is original though. I do not know if you guys have any #5's, if you can get one do it! Everytime I go to the range someone asks what kind of rifle it is. This is a well made weapon, and I would put up against any "new" high power rifle with little thought. I love all my bolts, but the Enfield has a certain "mystic" about it. Thanks for the NEW forum, I belive this is a "keeper." 8dDUCE.;)

I will say that the M-1898 Krag is good one. The Turk M-38 is another I grab for the range.

Here's the above mentioned Mauser. I wonder if one of you could please tell me how old it is. I believe it was Wirblewind or Beryl who long time ago told me it's a Chech rifle. Like I said, was dad's. He's not around to tell me any history. I can't believe these at 640x480 pics, only take up 73kb and I don't have to do Photopoint, or any of those. I forgot about the low-res feature on the camera. 1500 pictures can be stored on a single SuperDisk. 500 SF.

Finally, the overall look:

When I was a kid of 12, I first shot this magnificent rifle in upstate New York. Kicked like a son of a bitch. Shot a hornet's nest up in a tree at 100 yards and ran our asses off.

Then things changed. Since I inherited it 20 years, I never really shot it much, until I got the AK and other gun bug just in the last year. Just wasn't much interest in shooting. Stupid me.

So, three weeks ago out shooting, I took her, and I popped a 4-in clay at 250 yards first shot with this rifle. (most likely a very lucky shot) But, it proved accurate enough to knock down any elk. :) I now love this rifle and would very much like to connect with it's history.

It goes with me everytime I take my AK out - every week. Romanian SKS is next!!

Personally I really like the Russian guns. I prefer the historical aspects of collectiong more than anything, and being raised in the Cold War, the Russkis have a certain mystique. I really love Mosin Nagants of any stripe, they just amaze me with their simplicity and efficient design. I realize they aren't "pretty" or hailed for smooth actions, but they go boom, really loud.

Zou, BigCA, thanks guys.

That's a No.1 Mk.III* made in 1932 by BSA. This one probably did not see action in WWII, aside from perhaps some Home Guard sentry duty. The picture is kinda dark, so it's tough to see it, but the wood is a gorgeous blonde beech. I got it two years ago from a private collector at a show for $100. The bayo is an original Pattern 1907, 17" blade with blood gutters. :D

NC Rebel, that is one of the nices Enfields I've ever had the pleasure to drool over1 let me know if you ever want to sell it!

The BigCA, that's a Czech Mauser alright. It's hard to tell what make since the original stock isn't on it. I think the CZ24 had a straight handle and the M98 had a turned down handle like yours. Is that turned down handle a replacement per chance? I'm guessing the Mauser was originally a CZ24 or a M98/22. The arsenal stamp is from the 20's I believe.

This picture from OG gun board says this stamp was used in the 20's:

http://www.geocities.com/Yosemite/Gorge/4653/cz24a.jpg

Same stamp as you show.

Here's a link that explains arsenal marks on Czech Mausers, no pics though. http://www.conknet.com/mrj/Czech.htm

I'm definitely a 96 Swedish Mauser and 6.5 X 55 fan. Accurate, not a lot of recoil. Shot a High Power match with one once and actually came in first in my classification with it. :D \

From a Battle Rifle point of view the SMLE with the 10 round mag and in particular the No. 4 Mk II as the ultimate of the breed IMO.

By this statment are you saying you want a No.1 Mk III like NC_Rebel has? BTW I got a chance to shoot that rifle. Quite a nice trigger pull for an No. 1 Mk III.

SMLE = Short Magazine Lee Enfield. Also nicknamed Smellies. :)Technically all models from the No. 1 Mk III, No. 4 Mk 1, No. 4 Mk II, No. 5 are.

I am a 6.5 mm freak. All my current hunting rifles are 6.5 Sweed or 6.5-.284. But one of the sweetest bolt rifles I have ever fired was a Japanese 7mm Arasaka brought home as a war trophy by my grandpa. We had the bayonet and original sling for it and as a teenager I used to charge around the backyard killing shrubs and evil trees with the "cold steel."
Later, when i found suitable ammo in a local gun shop I bought enough Norma rounds to sight it in and kill my first deer. This rifle was partially burned in a house fire and my uncle has it now. I have tried to get it and restore it but he is hanging on to it.
I am still looking for an Arasaka in 6.5.

Well, like the Ford/Chevy debate, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. All of them are unique and nice in their own rites.

Mausers deserve the heraldry of being the most copied bolt action system in the world, but the the brothers Mauser invented the bolt action as we know it, too.

For a truly beautiful fit and finish (and butter smooth action), my overall favorite C&R is probably the 1909 Argentine Mauser made by DWM.

Well, being of the C&R persuasion, I love ALL bolt-actions, LOL!! Mausers of all brands and denominations are just great. I love the Mosin Nagants and right now they are my favorites. The history of these guns is astounding. The guns are solid, powerful, cheap to shoot, and pretty asccurate too. I love their styling!

I still don't have enough bolt actions, though. I want one of those Carcano M38's, a Swiss K31, a Turk, a 98/22...... Shoot, I want at least one of everything!! LOL But I still want a few more Mosins, starting with a M39 Finn and a M38. Oh, and I want to finish my M91/30's that I'm working on too.

There, I hope that explains my state of addleness!

my M38 Carcano. I know I'll probably get a lot of crap for it, but it is my favorite. I think it is because of the history, ex-Finn, grandpa's old hunter, and the looks the ammo gets when I'm at the range. Old Italian boxes with 1938 dates, also the round nosed bullets on the 7.35 cartridge. Haven't seen another at the range yet.

Anyway, I do have a camera..but, I haven't figured out how to get the pictures out of the little box and into this big box. I got some over there, but, don't know how...and I couldn't get them from the photo program over to this program...Geezzz, my heads hurting thinking about it. Still stuck in the dark ages!!!

I need to get Tuco to stop by my office and help me learn how to navigate the stuff. I could put up some good pics if he'd help me.

Madsen is the sweetest bolt gun I've got...silky smooth action..don't even have to change position to cycle the bolt..brass just comes out and lays next to the bench rest and cycles another round. The only problem is these have battle sights and are not meant for anything other than center of mass...

I like all bolt action rifles, but three stand out:

Soviet captured German K98k (WWII history, cheap old ammo, great feel, hunting, best looking)

Russian M44 (WWII history, big boom, cheap new ammo, indestructable, built-in bayonet)

Lee Enfield No4, Mk11. (WWII history, best "War" bolt-action rifle, 10-rd mag, 15-30 rpm)

The Portuguese Mauser-Vergiero has THE slickest bolt action I have ever felt, and I have 29 different WW2 era bolt and semi guns so far. It makes a standard Mauser or Mosin feel like a rattle trap. Absolutely perfect. Handles and balances nicely, too.

I'm not sure. There are things I like about all of them.
I like the handy length and looks of a No. 5 SMLE Jungle Carbine. I like the speed and slickness of the Enfield action also.
I like the history, noise, and suprising accuracy of the Mosin-Nagants. It's clunkiness even has a charm to it, and the design of the magazine feeding "interrupter" and how well it works still amazes me.
I like the history, ingenius design, looks, and accuracy of the K98.

But I really like almost everything about the Swedish M96. From it's long, slender, delicate looks, to the jewel like craftsmanship, to the devine 2 stage trigger, the near-MOA accuracy, to the ahead-of-it's time cartridge, these rifles are just very rewarding to own and shoot.
If you enjoy milsurps and don't have a Swede, I highly advise that you get one. Even with today's prices at ~$300 for a nice one, they're still a tremendous bargain.
I've had a 1904 Carl Gustafs for about a year now, and I'd like to have another.

I'm still not sure which is my favorite, I seem to like them all. I find myself shooting my Mosin M44 the most, and my Swiss K-31 the least. I havn't had the honor of owning or shooting any surplus U.S. arms, so voting Mosin or Mauser might be taken as if I prefer them over an 03A3 etc. when I don't have experiance with them.

Oh and I don't have an Enfield either, butt ugly weapon there! :later

My choice is my 1903A3 Springfield, it was a CMP buy and the best deal I have even gotten. My father is a WW2 vet and he was amazed at how slick the action is, he says that a soldier had to have worked on it and knew what he was doing. My Mauser 24/47 is almost as smooth. They both are great shooters by the way. My Turks, Yugos, Kar98 and 1917 are good but not like those two. The Mosins, well they are in a class by themselves but I love them as well.

Strongest bolt action based on post-WW2 tests was the Arisaka... no sh*t!

I have ... umm... a LOT of those.

I also have a lot of mosins...

Not nearly enough Enfields and K98's...

Not nearly enough M1903's.

I have a feeling I'm going to enjoy shooting my M1903 a lot - I haven't had a chance to get it out yet though.

In the spirit of the thread, I toss out any of the german made pre-wwI mauser contract rifles for South American countries. They just don't get any nicer for fit-n-finish than those old Ludwig Loewe 1891's or the DWM 1909's.

Well, I have bolt action rifles from all the major powers in WWII. If i had to take one of them into battle, or into anything needing a proper bolt gun, it would be a No.4Mk1. It's hard to beat the SMLE action. In my opinion, it's second to none.

Also, hard to stand up against a ten round mag when most others have 5.

I'm with you! If I could only have one bolt action rifle it would be an Enfield. I have a 1916 SMLE a Savage No. 4, a WWII dated No. 5, a "No. 7" (Indian 308) and soon to be the proud owner of a 2A (Indian 308).

Have at least one of most everything mentioned, including several nice Swedes, Fins and multiple Enfields.

My 97% original Loewe '91 Mauser long rifle (ground crest - darn it) is a gem of the gunmakers art. Old world craftsmanship, deep rich bluing and flawless unblemished walnut stock / handgard set this rifle apart.

Most of today's commercial rifles do not exhibit this standard of workmanship!

Definatly the 6.5x55 sweed. That is the flatiest shooting round ever I took mine out of the box and was nailing targets at 300 yards with iron sights.

Swedish Mauser, all the way! Plenty of K-98's out there, but it's a real treat to run across a nice Swedish Mauser. Especially an M-38!

germany made the best bolt gun ever with the model 1898 infantrie rifle.how can you argue it when a very large quantity of modern rifles are patterned after it. Even the ami's springfield '03 was a copy of the mauser (to a certain extent of course). my 1943 oberndorf k98 is a numbers matching, tack driving, mint condition piece of what curio and relic firearms are all about. it can hit a quarter at 200 yds no problem, the only thing close is the K-31 from switzerland which is just a bunch of germans that don't want to be called germans.

LOL only a third, the rest are Italians and French who don't want to be called Italian or French. ;)

I still prefer the Enfield, but your point is hard to top. :)

Well, I didn't feel qualified enough to answer this question in 2002, and I still don't feel qualified enough to answer it in 2007.

So i won't.... :)

I have to give it up for my Enfields. there is nothing quite like the action on those rifles. My K98 is nice, but not near as smooth as the enfields. I have never shot an '03, i'd love to, but they are just out of my price range. the mosins are nice, but a bit on the crude side. the K-31 is superb, but ammo is a bitch to find most of the time (i havent started reloading for it, YET). IMNSHO, the Enfields come out on top every time.

I only have 3 bolt actions. K98, M39 and a T99 i haven't shot yet.
While i like the sights better on the M39, i just love the mauser.

I think I'd vote for the K-31 Swiss. I'm not sure you can call it a bolt action, being that it's a straight pull but I consider it so. It's got the sweetest trigger of any stock military rifle I've ever tried, and it's well built and very accurate. Only downside is ammo's hard to get.

havent had experience wiht alot of these, but from what i've shot:

i love my mosins and prob shoot them the most, fun to "improve" and dirt cheap.

the k-31 is the "neatest" bolt rifle- very interesting mechanism.

but id have to pick the large ring mauser.

its great to shoot in the stock config., and you can easily get ANY PART you can possibly think of to make whatever you want out of them.

For me, it's a tie between an Enfield and the Swiss K31. If I had to pick, I pick the K31.

I've got a M1917 Enfield which I find slightly more accurate than my Mosin Nagant of K98K

I also really like the k31 with its neat trigger but I also love my M-1 grand

I also really like the k31 with its neat trigger but I also love my M-1 grandsorry I know the M-1 is semi not bolt. the k98 is sweet too and the Russian is hard to beat for price. Never shot an Enfield except the 1917 30-06.

I love my Mosin Nagant for it's rugged look & it's a pretty good shooter .
I would'nt say it was the best rifle made during WWII .
But good enough to get the job done .

SMLE, perfect placement of trigger to bolt. Smooth action due to cock on closing.

Vz. 24 SMOOTH action.

Finn M-39, serious look, great history.

Just acquired a new/old FR-8 (thanks Scott!), and I feel that it may be destined to become my new favorite bolt milsurp...but it has some stiff competition: SMLE No5Mk1 (1944), M-N M44 currently change places with each other as to which is my favorite...but I believe the FR-8 may give them a run for the money. Hell, there's room at the top for three!

I figure the Mauser action. But then the Enfield is slick. I like my K-31 too. Too many decisions to make.
