Interesting........

Did you buy them at Aim?

I have had a Turk 93 for almost 20 years now, It is fairly accurate and cheap to shoot.

I was thinking of picking up a few more, but now I am a little nervious.

I should have stated that all three came from SOG I have never had a problem with anything from them until now I have not tried to buy one from anyone else you know 3 strikes your out if any one has had good luck with these from another place let me know I still would like one but I want a shooter not a wall hanger.

I have 2 turkish mausers. Both work well and shoot accurately. I purchased the first from a gun store in Louisville, Ky, the second from a private dealer on Parallax's webpage. SOG is notorious for the quality (or lack thereof) of the cheaper milsurp rifles.

I have 5 good turk M38's that I shoot regular, I also have a 1893 that I dont shoot. If you buy a set of haeadspace gauges and check your turks your good to go. I have had to return 3 or 4 for bad headspace.............got mine from J&G and Century. Here is a pic of a nice tiger stripe turk....:D :) :) :D :D

Yes Headspace gauges are a good idea for the calibers of surplus rifles you might be into collecting. Especially 8 mm Mauser cal. weapons. If you want to get by cheap get a NO GO and a FIELD gauge. Sometimes with the Turks you can even get minimal headspace beyond what is considered a GO chamber.

This must be the condition you had on the one you couldn't close. On the one that would fire when you took the safety off you must have had a damaged sear surface of the cocking piece that wouldn't hold on the trigger.

You know they do usually put a warning on the rifles that says you need to have it checked out by a competent gunsmith before firing. These are some prime examples of why.

Try AIM for Turk Mausers. I have a feeling they tend to really look at their inventory unstead of just grab and ship as Century and SOG do. Heck I had 3 M38's in a shippment that were so rusted and rough in the bores that they would chew a cleaning patch to fibers in one pass down the bore! Those weapons were suitable for spareparts or as an action for a custom rifle project. They were rated as GOOD but were really POOR condition.

Dear Sirs-I agree about the source!Allan Schisel of Allan's Armory sold me a Turk that is the nicest that my Dealer ever saw!Mirror bore, nice wood and matching numbers!I also bought another one that was one of 5 that a buddy of mine got.Although it is the nicest of the 5,the wood is still mismatched.Still shoots as nice as the Allan's Armory one though!Allan typically underrates his guns.Dennis Kroh at Empire Arms is pretty good also.Never bought a Turk from Aim,but have bought other stuff and they are square. My .02 worth:)-Gearhead.

The one I got from SOG was a real POS. The barrel looked like an old sewer pipe, and the head spacing was off. I sold it to a buddy for what I paid for it. He cleaned it up, and has it hanging on his wall. I know that sounds cliche', but its true.

SOG has one of the lowest ratings by crufflers. I think the only one that is thought of being worse is Inter ordnance.
While AIM, Allans Armory, Empire Arms (high priced, but you will never be disappointed) and others enjoy a better reputation. Century is usually good to deal with and will take back anything your not happy with, and even credit your account for the returnshipping if you follow their guidlines.

I bought a Forsters field guage in 8mm from Brownells. I also got a .303 Brit guage even though I don't have an Enfiled yet but since I was ordering...:D They are $13.27 dealer price. $20. otherwise. I have 3 8mm Yugo's and none will close on the field guage.

The instructions say for best results take out the extractor and firing pin but think this is for setting headspace with go and no go not checking with a field guage.

I don't know of to many guys who are willing to dissasemble a bolt to check the headsapce at a crowded gun show, or a dealer who would let them do it standing at a table. I just stick the thing in like it's a shell, rim behind extractor and shove it in the chamber.

Also, what is the deal with the 19 degree and 20 degree shoulder. My field guage is not marked but I would assume it is probably for the 19 degree. Again, they talk about a 20 degree shoulder chamber not closing on a 19 degree go guage, so I don't know if this applies to a field guage.
