View Full Version : Vampire Colt .38 Spl.

Years ago, I remember reading an article on a really interesting Colt .38Spl. revolver that had been engraved with an unusual pattern. They called it the "Vampire Gun" or something like that. Came in a fitted case with bullets that had been sculpted to look like little vampire heads, bottle for Holy Water, and some other things I can't remember. Anybody remember this article? I was speaking of it to a friend who does engraving and we both thought it would be an interesting little project for him to try on some of our revolvers. I thought of having my Super Blackhawk engraved with a similar motif and he thinks his S&W would be neat that way. I have even thought about having him do a Lichenthrope design on my SBH. Anybody have any links to something like that as I cannot remember what magazine it was in and know I do not have that issue anymore as it was probably more than 10 years ago I saw it. Anybody else remember this article? Any help?
OK...after doing some more research, I believe it was the October 1989 issue of Guns & Ammo that had the article. I probably had that issue in storage until I moved and, at that time, my Wife talked me into getting rid of all the "old, musty stacks" of mags. Anybody else keep mags back that far? I'd be willing to purchase the issue off you if you have the correct one and I am correct about this being the the one with the article. Or...if someone would scan it for me and e-mail it to me I be in their debt.

Paul, I now have the October 1989 issue of Guns & Ammo magazine. There is an article, "Vampire-Killing Kit", by Phil Spangenberger that starts on page 72. It describes a Christian cross that can fire a .572" diameter silver ball. But there is no mention of a Colt revolver. Are you sure this is what you're looking for?

Steve...that's not it. I may be very wrong about the issue altogether. It was a Colt snubby, totally engraved, silver plated...really nice. Came in a fitted case with silver bullets (I know...silver for Werewolves) carved to look like vampire heads, a vial for Holy Water, a Cross, silver handled wooden stake, etc. The Rampant Colt logo was standing on a coffin. The grips were ebony and had little silver bat inlays. Two...like hash marks on a fighter plane. Guess it showed how many "blood suckers" it had dispatched. :) The muzzle had a Cross engraved on it. Really elaborate piece. Thanks for looking though. I appreciate that.

Colt? Not a bad Idea. It was not a Colt production but I'll bet they know about it. Great idea!

OK...I finally narrowed it down...it's called Colt Detective Special Vampire Hunter's Kit. It was a G&A article. Now, I just need to figure out which issue. Anybody? Can't figure out how to contact G&A for back issues. Hmmmm...no contact for that type of thing on their site.

zoff12, I'm guessing you can't find the back issues of Guns & Ammo magazine because a few years ago Peterson Publications sold out to Primedia. I'll start looking through my 'library' to see if I can find the article you mentioned. I'm guessing somewhere around the mid-to-late 1980's.

I remember it as well. A Detective special with a cross engraved at the muzzle and the gun plated in silver.

If you have a means of scanning the article, you can e-mail it to me and I'll post it. If not, I will wait until it arrives and I'll try and scan it at work in a few weeks. I don't have a home scanner.

Got the magazine today.
MUCH THANKS afweinie!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Almost tripped over myself trying to get in the door to open it. It's exactly as I remembered it. Beautiful! Although...I was unable to picture how that type of engraving would do on my Super Blackhawk and now I'm not so sure I want to do it to that gun. Got to do some research and see. I'll post pics of the magazine as soon as I can get them scanned. I don't have a scanner so I have to do it at work.

Let's hope my fervor will not make this anti-climactic. I have a tendency to get a little over inspired when it comes to guns. I really do love this engraving!
I'll see if I can't slip by the office this weekend and scan it. I won't go back to work until Wednesday and I don't think ya'll want to wait that long. :D

Yes...it is! Especially trying to do someting similar on a weapon that is so much larger than the Colt as the Super Blackhawk is. I (well...my friend) has his work cut out for him. If this is possible...there will have to be some changes due to the shape and size but I think it can be don. The grip will be interesting. My other friend...the wood carver...is anxious to get started. I have told him after seeing the pics, he will have free range to do as he sees fit.

I barely made it through! The cat was not happy...wanted attention and all it got was stepped on. mmmeeeeerrrooooowwwwww....oops.....sorry! :big:

Thanks...we have a good scanner at work.
I, too, am curious as to the thoughts of everyone else. I think it's one of the most interesting and beautiful engraved pistols I have ever seen. Looking forward to having one done in similar fashion...minus the carved bullets. I don't know anyone who could do that!

Wow! Very cool! That's an awful lot of engraving though...
I love all the little details the engraver did to pull the whole thing together. The cross at the muzzel is nice too... And those bullets..LOL :)
Very nice. Are you going to have one done that way? It would be awsome to see some more detailed pictures too....
Thanks for sharing that. :D

I doubt those bullets would be very accurate. The carving would throw the center of gravity so far off I wouldn't be suprised if they shot like a boomerang. :D

I hope my friend can do this. I won't have the silver plating done as what I will be working on will be a stainless Super Blackhawk. Don't want an exact either...just similar. I am going to give him a free range and just use the article as a basis. When (big when) it gets done, I'll post pics of it.
I wonder if there are any more pics of this gun floating around? I can't find any info on the net but that does not mean the don't exist.
