OK newbie here. I've seen some pictures of some AK pistols that look like the barrel is no longer than 9 inches. I have an AMD65 kit on its way. I plan on making that into a pistol but I want to make it as short as possible. Does that mean a new barrel, or cut and crown this barrel or chopping the back and re-throating it? I have no clue what to do?

move the gasblock back might have to remove some material from the barrel, drill new gas port, shorten the barrel crown/rethread and make new handguards.
one of the guys here did a real short barrel assy and didnt have any cycling problems and it was about as short as you could go.wish I could remember his name.you might also ask in the do it yourself forum perhaps one of the guys might be able to do the machine work for you.Im still debating if I want to do a pistol or a rifle from my AMD kit

If you move the gas block back, then you'll have to get a much shorter gas piston. A pistol based on the AMD-65 kit is only 2 to 3 inches longer than a Krink pistol. A Krink pistol uses a 8.5" barrel. With a Krink pistol, you'll have to use the special flash hider in order to cycle the action properly. The flash hider has a built-in expansion chamber.
The kit you would need to make a super-shorty AK pistol would be a AKSU-74 in either 7.62x39 or 5.56 NATO (.223). Right now, these are extremely hard to find. If you come across one in either of those two calibers, expect to pay a premium, especially in 7.62x39.

If you guys are interested in having your barrels shortened, contact droog. He is a member of this site, I have a barrel on its way to him now and from what I've been told, he does phenominal work. For short pistons contact hotbarrel, he does em for $15 shipped, (from what I've heard) Good luck.

Mr. Krinkov, You are incorrect when you say a special flash hider is necessary for the 8.5" pistol to cycle properly. I have an 8" pistol, and it functions flawlessly without any muzzle device. Now, this applies to a 7.62 pistol.
A 5.45 Krink (or clone) may well require a F/H with an expansion chamber.
Toxic, the member mentioned does the piston modification himself. :)

You are right. I stand corrected.
I was thinking of the 5.45 version, not the 7.62 version.

The shortest I have been able to go has been 8" and still have the threads. I think a guy could maybe go as short 7" if he used a 90 degree block and cut the front of it off alittle and put no threads on it. I just might try that one of these days.So far most of the ones Ive made have been 9-9 1/2". Ive done only 3 8" and all of them work fine.
