What do you think of taking a Romanian kit plus a 90 degree gas block and proceeding to cut the barrel down, shorten the gas tube and replacing the gas block? Could this work as well as it does with the AMDs???

The romanian kit would work fine but shortening the gas system requires more mods than just cutting the gas tube. To relocate the gas block to the rear you will have to turn the barrel diameter to accept the gas block in its new location. You will also have to drill a new gas port. You will also have to get a shorter gas piston or shorten the existing one. That is why most chose to use the AMD65. It has a shorter gas system already. If you are prepared to do the mods you may as well go shorter than the AMD. Hope this helps.

Anything is possible, It is just a matter of how much work and cash you want to put in it, and don't forget to install a shorter gas piston too if you cut down the gas tube. it could be very cool and unique project.
If you plan on a barrel shorter than 12.5" then it really doesn't matter what you use as a platform. If you are planning on using wooden hanguards the Romanian upper & lower handguards can be shortened and reshaped saving some money over an AMD build. Droog can probably do the barrel work for a modest cost, Shortbarrel can make the piston.
