I have this Hex tanning booth I am trying to wire up, The guy I got it off of had a regular light switch hooked uo to it to turn it off and on, But I have 220v run to it, I can make it come on by pushing the furnas relay switch thingy in, when I do that it will turn on the lamps, when I turn on the main breaker the fan and regular lamp comes on, If you can help I would be grateful, I am posting some Pics of the box and the schematic, If anyone can tell me how to make it run on a switch like the other guy did that will be great,
thanks,

I am an expert at this kind of stuff 1st make sure the power to the box is shut off 2nd don't stand in a puddle of water while working on it and 3rd...well I covered the 2 most important aspects of this so I will let you work on the rest so I don't ruin the fun.

John, forget the tanning booth. My wife just picked up some stuff called "Endless Summer" lotion made by Coppertone. This "sunless" tanning lotion has worked very good on the wife. No sense exposing yourself to harmful rays from the tanning booth. My wife says that her hands didn't even turn orange. It also says "Gradual Tan" on the bottle. This stuff is brand new this year and you can get it at Target. $7 worth lasts about a month and a half. Hell, I might even try it.

In all reality if he had a regular switch turn it on he probably had a relay system in line. With a relay system you can turn on everything with a standard light switch, that is because the light switch would activate the relay and the relay will control the 220. I have done relay work before, but I would recomend that if you want it done right you just spend the money to have it done right. It will be cheaper then burning down your house or making yourself a french fry... Just my $0.02

HOLY PHUCK!

One thing is quite sure -- NO licensed electrician wired that up!

0) The scortched wiring diagram gives me pause. Also, you don't have the entire wiring diagram there. Another page is missing, the one that shows the disconnect breaker, the contactor, the hourmeter, etc. (EDIT - Looking again I just saw the contactor contacts in the sooty area above the scortch.)

1) Note the 230V service entering the bottom of the enclosure, landing on the circuit breaker. Then the conductors come from the bottom of the circuit breaker and land on the terminals on the BOTTOM of the Furnas contactor! That's a NO-NO. They are supposed to be ALWAYS terminated on the TOP of a contactor, with the output coming off the bottom of the contactor.

2) Note the close-up of the fuse block in the top photo in Jon's post. It appears to me as if a previous owner has wrapped bare copper "shunts" around the 1st and 5th (far left, far right) fuses. If those copper wires are indeed shunts, the owner installed them to effctively "jumper" the fuses because either the fuses are toast or the owner had a problem with the two fuses burning out regularly. HUGE NO-NO.

3) I work with electrical controls daily as part and parcel of my work and can tell you how to fix the controls, but NFW will I do so from miles away. You absolutely need a good "boots on the ground" local electrician to check that thing out.

4) IMO, IIWM I'd send that POS back in a minute. It has SERIOUS issues, and NO WAY would I feel safe with it in my house. I question if the thing was operated correctly, and going farther, if it was even designed correctly. Couple the fuse shunts with the scortched wiring diagram and improperly wired controls and I really gotta wonder if you didn't take a screwing on this thing, Jon. Was me, it'd be back on the truck in a minute. You don't want to lose your house over something like this, and you very well could.

Sorry if that's not what you want to hear, but my conscience is clear in saying it.

I agree with Jericho, he probably had the light switch activate a isolated 110VAC relay coil with 220VAC rated contacts, then ran a 220VAC switch leg through the relay. That'd be a whole lot safer than just running the 220VAC switch leg through the light switch itself, though I it could be done.

If you'll notice on the diagram, it shows a breaker on the red and black AC power feed, and then a fused switch between points 5 and 6. That is probably your main power switch to the thing. You could put a isolated relay/switch anywhere between there and your red and black power feed breaker and that would switch the whole thing on and off.

An electrician would probably do it for you for 75 bucks . . . I'd have him do it.

Hey guys, Calm down, The reason I posted this was to get advice, I am scared of house current, I have two electricians here right now wiring it up, Ones my FIL, and one of his freinds, both certified master electricians, I know it was rigged before that is why I asked for help hoping someone could look at the schematic and tell me how it is supposed to be, Thanks, Thread is closed,

I'm really sort of proud to say that I have no experience with tanning boothes. But, I do have some experience with toaster ovens. That thing looks serious as hell. You sure you want to get in that thing?
