I purchased a new Bushy 16" barrelled carbine with the removable carry handle and birdcage flash hider lastnight. The barrel is not the stepped M-4 type. After a night of surfing the various AR sites i've started wondering if what i bought was the lightweight barrel version. Any markings on this gun to tell me what exactly it is i have? If it is a lightweight would it make any difference in function or accuracy? sorry for the noob questions but i'm pretty unfamiliar with AR's having been strictly an Ak-47 man until lastnight.

Welcome to the dark side!!! :D
I would suggest going to Bushmaster's website and matching your rifle against their listings. There are no markings on the Bushmasters that I know of to determine the model.

I do not think they threaded the lightweight barrels. I just checked the website, and they don't even show threaded barrels. My guess is that you have a "post-clinton" A3 carbine. Regardless, Bushmaster makes among the best ARs on the market, so you have yourself one fine rifle!

Was it used?
I mean to say, was there alot of flat tops right before the Clintoon ban?
I have a Bushmaster superlite but Ive changed the barrel to a wilson M4 now, but originally it had a 16 pencil barrel threaded for a comp brake and later a A2 when the ban sunset.
It was a flat top as well.
Maybe a new super lite?
Oh yea.
Welcome!

After a little investigation i think I've determined that its a Superlight A3 carbine. I looked it up in the Bushmaster Catalog that came with the rifle and in the barrel section i found one that matched the profile of my rifle. How involved a job is it to swap barrels out? looking at the catalog I can buy a 14.5 inch M-4 barrel w/ an Izzy Compensator for $215 .

Not really sure since Ive only watched it be done, I too was always a AK guy till that superlight started it for me. Im sold on the AR system.
But I would keep that barrel for a while, Its nice and light and doesnt loose too much accuracy when its heated up. My m4 barrel is heavy as all get out compared to the other one.
For me it was a shoddy gunsmith who decided to cut my barrel too short for threads to remain compliant.
I HAD to change barrels so I went with the one i have now.
Ive got two ARs now and that superlight is still throwin everything from wolf to lake city with no problemo, They make a good rifle.
