ok....ive heard nothing but bad news about shooting wolf ammo thru an ar-15...is this just crap or is there really somehting to this? as long as you are shooting a fmj thru the barrel, the steel case should have no effect on the contacting reciever parts.....just my take on it....would like some info. :gun:

The only problem with wolf is it costs half as much, so you end up shooting twice as much.
Shooting twice as many rounds through your barrel can well.. you get the idea ;)
MYTH::
Wolf causes extractor wear
FACT::
Wolf cases are made of soft steel. All steel is not created equally. If people claim their HARD steel extractors are getting withered away by SOFT steel cases, then they better start buying quality parts.
MYTH::
Wolf causes laquer to build up causing cases to stick in the chamber
FACT::
Wolf uses a new type of case to prevent what might have been laquer build up. The new cases are gray in color. Laquer coated cases are green. I haven't had problems with either.
MYTH::
Using wolf will cause kittens to fall from the sky, the apocolypse to come, and the world to end.
;)
Wolf is not competition ammo. It's practice/plinking ammo. It won't 100% reliable, but odds are it will be 99.99% reliable. It will be dirtier, so you'll have to clean your gun a bit more. Accuracy of wolf ammo is substantially less than that of XM193 or Q3131A ammo.
For the price and quality. Wolf can't be beat. I use it a lot when I'm just dicking around. Never would I use it in a life or death situation.

The only Wolf ammo I have ever had problems with is .223 62gr HP. (feeding issues).
Hell I'm almost at the 2,000 round mark on my AR I built this christmas, all I've ran is wolf. :ywoot
I'd rather have dirty ammo than an empty wallet.
And I would use Wolf in SHTF. The 762x39 JSP is a mean motherfucker. The .223 62 gr FMJcan whip right through a damn car with ease.

I'd reccomend starting with the 55grain FMJ
Our sponsor Sportsmans Guide has good prices on wolf.
There is also coupon discounts located somewhere around the General discussion pages I beleive. (That is if you're planning on ordering it online)
As for the info,
I try to help when I can. :) Thanks for the compliments.

First let me say I'm a Wolf whore and proud. I have shot 55 gr and 62 gr hollowpoint through my brand spanking new DPMS w/zero problems. No ftf, no problems at all...this was during the break in procedure. At 200 rds I sent it off to Robar for a complete refinishing and they report no abnormal wear on any parts. Do you need match ammo? When was the last match you shot in again? Is mine a qualified opinion other than being an avid shooter? Hell no. You want a true qualified opinion? Ask 11Binf (Board member), I followed his advice from day 1 and have had NO problems, the guy knows exactly what he is talking about.

what kind of wear on the brass deflector is my gun going to experience from the steel case used by wolf ammo? it already has marks from the brass flying out, will steel cause more damage to the deflector? i take pride in my beautiful bushmaster, and would like to keep it that way. :sniper:

My case deflector is worn down. I proudly carry a rifle that looks like it's been shot.
I'm more afraid of the person with a worn rifle, than I am of the one with a safe queen ;)
Think of it as character. Your case deflector shouldn't see any added wear from using wolf. It will see wear and tear from use.

Ive shot just as much wolf in my AR's as I have brass and have experienced no adverse affects or excessive wear. Its dirty like a whore on main st. and not too accurate past 100 yards but its cheap and goes bang everytime.

Wolf IS crap ammo compared to almost anything else. It's filthy, terribly inconsistant, smells awful, and has unreloadable steel cases. That said, the newer grey case stuff is an OK cheap plinking round. Personally.....I prefer to feed my AR's ammo that will perform better on a more consistant basis for a couple dollars more a case and leave the Wolf for the AK's.
Take a look at the 55gr FMJ "canned heat" from Georgia-Arms. Great stuff.

I swear by Wolf. The best thing that's happened to their ammo is they are now using all copper jackets instead of the copper plated steel.
A plus for barrel life.

I haven't shot the new polymer-sealed wolf (grey cases).
I bought a case of the 62gr a few years back and torture-tested it through 7 or 8 different firearms, including 4 different AR-15's, a Daewoo, a Bushmaster M17S bullpup and a friend's new england firearms single-shot .223.
Result was cases stuck (failure to extract), requiring a cleaning rod to tap out the empty, every four or five rounds.
I bought a case of the 55gr to torture test through 8 different AR's (including the four used with 62gr test above) and the Daewoo - about three mags per gun and 400 rounds on full auto through one of my post-samples (and a beta-c dump as part of that), with no problems at all.
I'd have no problem with the 55gr wolf, and would avoid the 62gr based on my personal testing experience.
I no longer fire wolf because I got a great deal on Barnaul 62gr, which has given me no problems in over 4000 rounds so far, and was $80/1000 delivered in qty 10k+. So, I don't fire wolf 62gr because of bad experiences, and don't fire wolf in general because it's too expensive! :)
