Making a silk purse out of a sow's ear...

Here is an AK pistol that I've just finished refinishing for boardmember bbittel. This started life as one of Joeken's pistols built on Horn's receiver. This was one of the pistols with the Bulgarian bakeklite lowers, Romanian pistol grip and the matt black finish.

Let me say that bbittel gave me free reign over customizing his pistol. Great work when you can get it!

I started by stripping the matt finish off. Whatever it was, it came off with one rag full of M.E.K. The metal's surface is very rough with dents, scratches, dings etc. Judging from the engraving well....

Next I made a custom gas tube from an AK 74. Then I painted it all except the bolt carrier and trigger, in gunmetal blue Gunkote. The carrier and trigger I brushed up to a semi gloss polish.

The handguards are Polish AKM. These I got in a "good luck" Polish kit from ORF. The looked like absolute hell, I'm not sure why I never tossed them, but I wanted the handguards to be smooth, sleek and slim line. I figured, these may work out after lots of belt sanding. They were shaped, sanded and then I finished them in Russian Spirit Varnish.

Lastly I scrounged through my big box 'o pistol grips and pulled out one that I thought was gloss black, but under the light it is actually navy blue. The checkering indicates Romanian but?

I like! I thought AK pistols were kinda Tard-Tastic, but after seeing a few well done ones on here, I must say I want one. Probably a 74 Krink style one... I do like that bolt you did....

Very, very nice. Excellent work as always. I always wonder what the guys in the Romanian/Hungarian/Bulgarian/etc. factories would say after seeing teadie's work, probably give them an inferiority complex.

Thanks everyone. I'm usually working on doing "clones" so getting the opportunity to stretch out a bit is refreshing and fun.
