how much play should there be when the cylinder lock is engaged {hammer back }?
my ruger and smith/wesson do not have much play at all, but this little 38 has a little play. just concerned about firing it .

On the Rossi 462 (.357, 2''bbl, stnls) there is no movement back and forth (between breech face & cylinder), but there is a little movement side to side. Make sure the cylinder arm retention screw is tight. They have a tendency to work loose.

I know a couple of guys who own Rossi revolvers; never any problems.
