Hi all..
I found a this savage model 99pe in an area gunshop. This thing is a beaut! It is in 308 with an internal rotary magazine(4 or 5 rnd?). I believe PE indicates "presentation grade". The receiver is silver with lots of engraveing(roll stamping?). There are included nicely detailed images of a deer and a cougar. The overall condition appeared very good plus. The serial# is over a million: 1092xxx. The stock wood is very pretty also. The thing has a pair of cheezy:) rings mounted although I think this model had factory drilled holes(?).

The shop had it price labeled at $1900 but gave a price offer of $1500. I've started looking around the web at Gunbroker, GunsAmerica, LeverGun, Savage99.com and others and think maybe $1000 is more like a real value. The 99 model series of guns has a LOT of variations with pricing widely varried, I've found only DE grades refered to only twice in my searches and they are apparently "one step lower" in engraving and pricing.

Please let me know what you think of value and any things to look for in evaluating this rifle. Any other websites or resources?

I've been focusing on military pattern rifles up til now and am not confident with collector grade commercial/civillian weapons.

Thank You for reading my long question... :)

StinkyCheese, the Savage Model 99PE variant was made from about 1965-1970. This is truely a presentation grade version of the Model 99. The Model 99PE had an engraved receiver and a hand-checkered finely figured walnut stock. The rotary magazine should be 5-shot and were chambered in .243 Win., .284 Win., or .308 Win. calibers with a 22" barrel. They were drilled & tapped from the factory. For a point of reference, the Blue Book Of Gun Values - 26th Edition lists the following values for the Model 99PE:

100% - $1,500
98% - $1,200
95% - $950
90% - $800
80% - $600
70% - $500
60% - $400

Hope this helps!

Thanks for the blue book input. Is the beauty posted one of yours? I find this line of sporting arms very attractive. Heck, even the "rats" have an appeal :) The rifle in oinsideration is probably 90% plus to 95% minus (my one-time short inspection). It has only been lightly used. I don't know if I could avoid shooting this thing alot...Screw the investment Heh, Heh, Heh !

Any tips on what to look for in Form, Function, or other pre-purchase inspection ideas?

Again Thanks.

PS: Steve, I do enjoy the news-type articles/essays that you post periodocally. I'll look forward to reading more :)

Sincerely,
SC

StinkyCheeze, the Savage Model 99 was always a well designed rifle. Focus on the barrel & action for any abuse. My guess is you won't find much. The picture I posted in not my rifle. There can't be too many Model 99PE's out there. You found a very nice rifle!
