View Full Version : Velocity Out Of Shortened barrel?

Has anyone done a chrono on their pistol or krink? Just curious of how much punch you lose compared to the standard 16inch AK barrel.

My guess is about 50 fps per inch lost based on .308 rifle barrel experiments I read about years ago.

A 8.1" barreled 5.45 has a 2,350 FPS velocity with 60 gr. FMJ bullets.

How do I know?

Kalashnikov designed the AK-74SU with a 8.1" barrel for a reason- to get the same velocity as the 7.62x39mm 123gr. FMJ round. Do not ask me why he did this, but that is the reason for it. I guess it was so you would know that the 5.45 has half the power of the 7.62x39mm?

I tried to chronograph my 8" AK but my buddy was afraid I would blow his screens all to hell but I have another buddy that has one so Ill try him and get back with the results. :lol:

No I havent got a chance to talk to my friend yet ,He is a truck driver and has been on the road alot lately.But as soon as he gets into town that will be the plan. He has everything right by the patio door so we just hall it out and set up on the deck and blast away. :happydanc
