CMP Sporter? My club in Sheffield, Alabama has been shooting this once a month for just over two years now. Usually just an intrepid few show up. But, I have learned alot about shooting from this game and had fun at the same time.
Are you refering to sporter rifle? Sounds like it. I got started last year w/ a Rem 597 and had a blast(pun intended)
Damn that wind on the range always blowing me around :) J/K it's indoors.
I have plans to build an ultra light 10/22 but the funds aren't there yet.
What rifle/ammo do you use?

Go to the CMP website and download both the PDF CMP Rules and the PDF pamphlet they have on this style of shooting.

If I remember correctly, rifle weight has to be under 7.5 pounds, trigger pull over 3 pounds. Max scope power is 6X (variables that can go over 6X are taped at some power 6 or below). Any action is legal, but practically it has to be a repeater. The course of fire is first
up to 10 sighters at 50 yards prone, then
10 shots slow fire prone at 50 yards, then
rapid fire two strings of 5 shots at 50 yards, then
10 shots slow fire sitting or kneeling at 50 yards, then
rapid fire two strings of 5 shots at 50 yards, then
10 shots slow fire offhand (no sling) at 25 yards, then
rapid fire two strings of 5 shots at 25 yards.
Slings are allowed everywhere but the Offhand. For the rapid fire sequences, 25 seconds for autos, 30 seconds for all other actions.
The CMP .22 Sporter target is just a 50 Meter free pistol target.
You cannot have loaded magazines before coming to the line. You get a "Load" command with a lengthy wait while people load tubes, rotaries, boxes, etc, then "Start". When time has expired the command is "Stop."
I used a un-modified bolt-action Marlin 25N this year with the 20-year old T22 ammo CMP issued on the line and won a silver. My daughter used a Ruger 10/22 last year and had some reliability issues. I'll use better ammo next year and have better groups at longer range.

I have never herd of the scope having to be under a certain power, good thing cause mine is 6-18X, I like to use the 18 to see if I kept them in the black LOL!
