Does the longer barrel really make that much difference?

I think it's a weight issue, more than anything. The longer barreled 91/30's are quite a it heavier than the carbine M44's. More weight = less felt recoil.

yes. although i have never fired a 91/30 for comparison, i didn't think my m44 kicked too bad. from some of the stuff i've read, i was expecting to be able to handle no more than 5 rounds or so. i think i could go for quite a few more.

longer barrel + more wood = more weight = - recoil

that big ass round also has more room to burn up in the bbl instead of exploding out the end in a huge fireball that makes a lotta folks think there's a lot of recoil...

My 91/30 isn't bad, but my m44 kicks like Hell

Simple the M91/30 weighs more so that dampans the recoil.

Actually, its almost all due to shorter barrel. The M44 bayonet makes up most of the lost weight.

Hey where's a moderator when you need one??? These kind of threads will help insure a C+R forum will remain. Moderators should be moving these to the C+R with a sticky notification here....

I doubt they look for this kind of stuff.

If I were one I'd definately move it to the C&R board.

OK, I looked it up. The 91/30 weighs less than the shorter 1944 due to the 44's bayonet and bayo mount by a fraction of a pound. I left the book out in the truck so I don't have the figures, but it was 9.5 pounds or so for the 91/30 and 9.65 for the M44, which illustrates one of the 91/30'd few advantages over Mausers and other contemporaries- it comes to the point of aim naturally with less effort. The may be uglier, but they are well balanced!

So yes, recoil differs between the two based solely on barrel length. Technically, the 91/30 has more barrel to allow the gas to expand more and the pressure to diminish before the bullet leaves the barrel, thus the pressure exiting the muzzle is less than the pressure release of the shorter M44.
