Just wondering if a romy kit would make a decent pistol build. I missed out on the AMD's, But I do have a krink gas piston laying around. So are these latest romy kits a good platform for a newbe builder? It'll be a screw build. My first build. I already have two 1975 kits.

gunnutz,

Im interested in the same thing. Im sending money away next week to get a kit from Bocefus and wouldnt mind making it into a pistol build.

Hopefully one of the "pistol professionals" (slamfire) will be able to tell us what all would be required in order to pull this off.

Here's one that started as a Romy kit.

:naughty:
Cut the Bbl down to legal pistol length, change the rear trunion and remember no front pistol grip.

Thought Bbl had to be less than 16".
Yes/No ? ? ?

As long as there is no way to attach a stock, and no forward grip, a barrel length over 16" would be legal.
I've never seen any regulation to the contrary.

If that is the case GREAT !

Killer! Any ideas on flairing the original gas tube once cut down to accept the krinkov piston? or should I just look for an AMD tube and piston?

It all depends how short you are planning to go with the barrel length.
As you see in the pic above, I silver soldered the modified front sight onto the gastube, then shortened the barrel to 12.5".
The gas tube and piston is standard length.

If you decide to go shorter, the barrel will have to be turned to accomodate repositioning of the gas block and front sight. The piston will have to be modified or a new one made. Handguards will also have to be modified, as will the gastube.
A lot of labor, but well worth it in the long run.

Since you can build a legal folder, what would be the point of a 16" barrel "Pistol".

SLAMFIRE,
When you cut down the barrel, do you need to do anything to the muzzle, ie. crowning? Does it need to be done by someone that knows what they are doing, ie. gunsmith? I like the look of that custom GB/sight, and you just got me thinking that I need another romy kit to build another pistol! Damn you!

Anybody know the bbl diameter on these? is it .565? if so I found another krink part!

I use a crowning tool from Brownells. No need to disassemble the barrel,
just use the correct pilot, and hand turn unyil the muzzle is square. They offer different degree crowning cutters.
If you have access to a lathe and can press the barrel out of the trunion,
this is the best way to crown a barrel.

http://www.gunsnet.net/album/data//500/28314short_001-med.jpg This is a 9" barrel and a 1-5/8" piston, the work was done by a couple members of this board. It is a "work in progress" that was initiated by my good friend Slamfire. (I saw the one he made and I had to have one) Since the start of this build I have become addicted to the variations that are possible. I am now working on another copy of one of Slam's builds, the 12.5". I thought that the amd's were the only way to do a pistol, but that is not the case. You can have a damn nice build using a stansard romy kit as a starting point.http://www.gunsnet.net/album/data//500/28314pistol_018-med.jpg

I'm curious about the location of the gas port relative to bbl length. To provide proper timing, an AR15 style rifle hase the gas port is located differently relative to bbl length. An FAL needs to have the gasport (hole in the bbl) sized differently when going with a shorter bbl as well.

Any experts?

308,
The gasport needs to be drilled one drill size larger than the orginal.
It seems from my pistols, the relationship of gasport to barrel length is not critical.
Unlike the 223, the 7.62 seems to have enough "UMP" to let the piston do its job of unlocking the bolt.

Seems there could be chance of un-necessary recoil, ie too much gas bleed off if not done correctly. Proly be a good idea to get some Krink specs...just to see.

We "shade tree" builders don't need no stinkin' specs....................

Just kidding.
I've had no problems whatsoever, and haven't heard of anyone having the ones you describe.

Thats one short ass AK! exactly what I'm going to try. Well maybe not quite as short. But I'm using a krink piston. I just got to figure out a way to turn down the bbl on a romy kit with a poor mans budget.

That's easy:

DROOG :)

Send him your kit and $150.00 and he'll do you right.
