View Full Version : A really modified gasblock/sight

I've modified several gasblocks and sight bases for pistol builds. The problem is when building a pistol, there was no provision to hold the cleaning rod and no sight plunger to hold the muzzle devices in place. If you're a cheapo like me, you hate spending the bucks for a factory combo.
I got somewhat of a brain fart yesterday and made a combo that takes care of the two issues stated above.
A cleaning rod retainer was cut off a sight base and silver soldered onto the bottom of the gasblock.
Thanks to the extra material added, there is now a place to put the plunger and spring to hold a muzzle device in place. I know, the plunger is on the bottom, but this won't present any problems.

It would appear you spend way to much time in the arcade. Damn Dan you should really think about getting a part time job or something .Maybe a greeter at Walmart. :nanaboo:

I knew I could make you laugh.

If I were a door greeter, how could I come up with some of these crazy ideas I come up with??

Hmm, maybe being one WOULD help with the ideas.

I think if you were a door greeter you'd be wanting to bring one of your creations to work after awhile :D
That's a way cool sight/gasblock BTW!

would JBWeld work okay for this, or is silver soldering required?

i mean if JB can be used to fix cracked engine blocks.... *shrug*

Damn Bubba, Your getting to be quite the craftsman! I think it's about time that you take this hobby of yours and make a little change with it!
The next evolution should be able to accept 24mm x1.5 devices, kind of like this one.

I've asked a member here if he can get a machine shop to fabricate these without the 24mm threads. There are more 14-1mm muzzle devices in circulation than 22 or 24mm ones.

So when you shorten an AK's piston and gas tube to the extent you have, what other things do you need to modify to assist in proper cycling? I've built an HK51 so I have the skills I just need the data to get going on this build.
I love how short you got that pistol!!!

The gas port needs to be opened slightly.
Other than that, load a mag, and fire away.

What method did you use to install the new combo?

I was able to get the pins out of the GB and remove the old GB...now I am having trouble installing the new combo.

I don't want to hit it too hard for fear of breaking it...

Any suggestions?

:)

You may need to use emery cloth or fine grit sandpaper to clean up inside the
gasblock. This should give the clearance you need to get it back on the barrel.

CelticDragon1972
10-12-2005, 12:43 PM
Ok I was able to install it...but I am just a bit worried that the pins are not as tight as they were when I removed them...the GB is tight and the pins are somewhat tight...

The pin holes weren't touched, except when blasted. I don't think blasting would have increased the diameter of the holes at all.
Glad you got it on ok.

I wasn't saying it was anything you did...I was wondering that perhaps the pin hole on the new GB are slightly larger than the old GB...

You wouldn't think so with all these Romy's supposedly being in spec (meaning, that parts can be interchangeable with out fitting or adjustments).

But, the GB is on real solid. It will take a lot of force to move and I doubt that even the gas pressure will be able to move it, and the pins can't be moved unless you punched them out. One will take some pressure to remove but the other will take only slight pressure. I'm not worried about it. I don't think it will vibrate out.

All in all, it will be fine....can't wait till I get the receiver to start building.

Damn man, I'll take one of those GB/FSB's too. Then I can make me an 8" too.

As for MMETALMANN's bulds, once he gets all geared up, I think he may give Slam a run for his money on the pistols. He does good work.
