The "Band of Brothers" has gotten me excited about American Milsurp again.

I had a nice M1 Carbine earlier this year. I had it on "extended loan" from a friend. It was made by Winchester (I think) never was too exicted by the gun, it always seemed kind of "ho hum" next to my Garand.

After I watched the series, I have a renewed interest in the weapon.

What are they worth (ball park figure average condition)?

Should I look for another original, or an used Iver Johnson?

Should I consider one of the new ones by IMI?

Zouave,
The average price of an Inland M1 Carbine in Good condition is going to be at least $450 bucks. If it's a name brand like a Winchester try or in better condition $550 to $650. Some of the others like Postal Meter and some of the others are nearly as much and maybe more. This isn't my area of expertese, but I have seen weapons in these price ranges.

Get an Iver Johnson . . . only if it was cheap enough. I've looked at the IAI carbines and I like what I see. The only thing I don't like about them is the metal hand guard. I'd imediately go get a nice GI surplus hand guard and fit it if I got one of the IAI carbines.

I have pretty much concluded that I'm not paying the prices for a GI carbine just to plug a hole in my US Small Arms collection. Though technically it isn't a US Small Arm if it's an IAI! I'd use the pissed smiley but it seems to be broken! LOL!

Why not IAI are made in Texas.

I have one. It's a pretty fun little rifle. I also like the steel vented handguard better than the wooden ones. Mine also has a bayonet lug on it(from factory). Plus I bought a set of M1 Carbine muzzle brake and flash hider I'll attach every once in awhile.

Zouave,

How to say this. Well let me try it this way. I use to work for a rifle barrel company called H&H Barrel Works. I also hung around the guy that took over after H&H went belly up financially.

During that time, the resurrected company got a contract to do barrels for Iver Johnson. On the print that showed specs for doing .30 carbine barrel blanks for them they specified a drilled hole that was not reamed to dimension. If memory serves me the nominal was a little bigger than .302". I could be wrong on the size thing but I'm dead sure on the no reamed bore part.

See reaming if you are unfamiliar with the term is a process for truing up a drilled hole and making it smoother. Once the hole is drilled in the blank the hole is reamed to true it and get out the drill marks. Then the rifling is added by Button rifling process.

Anyway, the point I'm making is they would not pay for a reamed hole only a drilled and rifled hole. So IMO the I&J's have really crappy barrels if they were all produced to the print that was given the company to make them to.

Stick with the IAI's or get a GI carbine if you want one is my point of all this typing. :)

Do any of our favorite dealers have the IAI M1 carbines?

(AIM, IO, Etc)

AIM has had them in the past but I don't think they have any right now. Interord has never had them to the best of my knowledge. SOG ;puke: . . . may have them! Geeze I can't believe I might have just endorsed SOG for anything other than a guaranteed hard time by arrogant stupid sales people! ;puke:

1. Mine is an Singer WWII model. Your can get them between 350 and 450 depending on where you go and what gun show you attend. I would go with the Milsurp only because I collect military antiques.

2. American Rifleman did a article on the Israeli Carbine IAI and had a favorable report. Ive seen them at the gun dealers and they look nice. You can get all wood furniture if you special order it. I dont recall the price but Ive heard they are not bad.

3. Still if you want an M1 Carbine, why not get the real article. cost the same and the value can only increase.

I have an IAI, been very please with it. Don't see why everyone wants to replace the handguard...works fine with me.
