I don't see any activity on this forum but I'll post and hope someone reads it?

I am interested in taking a Mosin barrel and cutting it off on both ends and then turning down the shortened chamber end to fit an AK trunion with my lathe. Then I will need to do a chamber ream for the 7.62x39.

I have never done a chamber ream, I can find a source to purchase the reamer tools but I don't know what to do with them after that?

Can someone point me to a book, video, web site or someplace that tells me how to ream a new chamber?

If you already own a lathe and have used it, you already know the answer.

TAKE YOUR TIME. Make SURE the setup is correct. Make SURE everything is dead on square. If you don't you will have major problems.

Reaming a barrel is fairly easy. Getting the headspace correct is another matter. And if you screw it up, you generally only have so much barrel to 'turn down' again and rethread.

Also consider getting 'barrel blanks' from Shilen or other barrel makers, as this might help. Any reason you want to use a Mosin Nagant barrel on an AK? Just curious.

If you have any specific questions, feel free to ask away.

brokin8ball26,
I think the reason you can't post a link is because you are NOT a paid member of this forum. Neither am I and there are SEVERAL features you don't have until you contribute to the cause, as it were. Given how MUCH MONEY it takes to keep ANY popular website up and running, I've been personally surprised you don't see this more often.

I was given this old lathe but I haven't tried to use it yet. The reason I wanted to use the Mosin barrel is the bore is correct and I can cut off both ends, rechamber and turn down one end to fit and then do an in-line muzzel break on the front end and have a longer barrel and you can buy the barrel for $4 or $5 so it's cheap to play with if you mess it up. I also thought with the longer barrel I might get better accuracy.

JimM44- Sounds like a cool idea, if you get a chance please post some pics.
Where did you find the "reamer tools"?
