I decided not to have a stove inside since I don't want to build a hearth and I really don't have room for any of that
The central air furnace has two returns.... Now if I get ahold of a firebox and come up with an effective way to get the heated air into the ductwork without suffocating myself in the process... will it hurt anything if the furnace did happen to come on?
What I mean is, can I have hot air going into one of the returns while the furnace is on?
If not I thought maybe I could just install a cutout like one would have on an automobile exhaust system

What I did was I bought a small electric heater. I'm usually only in one room most of the time, so I can close the door and heat that up pretty good with the portable heater. Then I can keep the central thermostat set to the mid 50's.
It does increase the electric bill, but it cuts the gas bill by about double that amount.

Damn, I wish I was thinking about winter. It'll be 101º here tomorrow.

I've heard that if you place a number of large rocks in a circle, you can build a fire in the center for heat.
Have you considered that as a cheap home heating method?

Everyone would be doing that but rocks are just too darned expensive.
You're not thinking!

i just solved my heating problem, although the term "cheap" is relative. i bought a 5 ton heating/cooling package unit and installed it and ran all the ducts myself. total cost doing it myself was around $3500 for everything, and that included having a professional electrician install a bigger utility box to add breakers and about ten ducts, covers, return vent, the 2 18" supply/return ducts, a bunch of ductboard, and a giant mount and cover outside for the unit. i lucked out in getting the unit for $400.
if i had paid a company to do it i would be looking at over twice that easily.
