Hello everyone :ywoot

Hopefully I will be picking up my first firearm in the next few weeks. I have been reading the posts on this board, and asking some friends some questions about getting my first gun.

So far it looks like I will be getting a Taurus, maybe a PT111. My friend has one, and says both he and his girlfriend like the way it feels. I will be taking my girl to the range, and to any classes I take, so I want something we can both use comfortably.

Eventually I will get a rifle, but for living in an apartment, I think I would be better off with a handgun. I have shot many different types of guns growing up. Last time I went to the range I fired a 22 rifle(scope), a 38 revolver(old gun), two different 9mm(glock,something else). Before that I've fired a fair amount of rifles, including some type of 30-0-6(i think, guy said it was a thirty aut six???), which was pretty cool for being 14 years old. I have never had the chance to fire a shotgun, and look forward to doing that. My girl has fired a shotgun, rifle, and handgun.

One Question: where is a good place to shop for used guns?

I welcome any opinions or ideas.

Good place for used guns is a pawn shop, Gun Show, or look in the yellow pages under "Guns & Gunsmiths" or the like and try out any of the locally owned and operated stores, vice the Big chain stores like "gander mountain" "cabelas" or "on-target". the chain stores will probably also have used guns, and are normally inspected by a competent gunsmith before being put up for sale. I would advise you to be cautious/wary about the pawn shop or gunshow, do some research on the makes/models you are looking into buying, look at: any concistent problems or defents or chief complaints from others about that model, parts and accessory availability, and how much extra mags cost. just my .02

ps; I have normally found the biggest used selection for both handguns and long guns at the locally owned, gunshops/gunsmiths

Thanks for the welcome, and the advice.

I went with the pt111, and I feel I made a good choice for a beginers gun. It is easy to shoot and clean. My girlfriend likes it (its still a gun to her), and is getting better at the range. I let her shoot a 38 special 5-shooter, and she likes the taurus better. I found a local gun shop where they had the gun with 2 mags cheaper than i could find it online. only took 1 hour and i had the gun (gotta love gun laws here, or the lack of).

I started looking at pump action shotguns, and now i really want one. But I think i might step up my handgun a notch first. I like to leave the taurus at home with my girl, and might be looking into a .45 or anything with a little more punch than what i got now.

Welcome to the group !!!

My daughter's carry pistol is a PT111 Millennium Pro. Nice light weight with 12 +1 in a reasonably small package. Not the most intuitive pointer we have, but it will do the job if it comes down to it.

A warning in case you get into AKs, they are highly addictive. Just can't own one!!! :D

Glad to hear it.

I used to have a PT-140 (and have shot the PT-111). They seem nice at first, but I found that the trigger pull on the PT series is overly long and harsh (12 lbs trigger pull = decreasing accuracy). When we (wife and I) went and got our ccw's she was planning on using the PT-140. Neither she nor the other individual who brought a PT qualified with their pistols the first couple of times through. My wife went to a Bersa firestorm (very close to the .380 sig) and is far better off with it. Everyone I know that has had a PT has sold it and moved on over the last few years.

Gust my personal experiences with the PT.

Thanks for the advice on the PT, i did shoot a friends gun, cant remember what kind, and was almost shocked when it fired with just a touch compared to my PT. The trigger is hard to pull, but i have gotten used to it, and am pretty acurate with it.

thanks for the advice on the AK's, i will try to stay away for a while until I inherent alot of money from a family member i dont have :apileon:
