I was wondering if anyone has any idea of who made the upper I just got. It's a 24" HBAR barrel with A1 sights, tear drop assist, no brass deflector and a birdcage flash hider. I can't find a single manufacturer's mark on it. I'm not familiar enough with AR's to know what twist rate it is by looking but it appears to be chrome lined. TIA

24" HBAR or 24" stainless steel barrel?
With that length of barrel, it would most likely limit it to a wilson blank, which would reduce the possibilities to the liklihood of Bushmaster, RRA, or possibly from a kit build from places like J&T or Model 1.
Check the top of the barrel near the muzzle and check for proof marks there.
If you can tell us the color of the A1 upper, the takedown hole size (large or small), twist rate if its on the top of the barrel near the front, etc. That'd be great. Could help you more.
From the description you gave, it could be a number of things.

It's a 24" HBAR, not stainless. It's a parked grey color, it's a regular sized hole, no markings near the front of the barrel, under handguards, anywhere. I'm really starting to think it's a garage special. The guy I got it from didn't know the story on it either, and had only 25 rnds down the pipe. The bore is in great shape and the bolt carrier assembly and charging handle are like new. Any ideas?

It's a frankenstein upper for sure. As to who made it.. who knows.
My guess would be that it was probably created from a used oldschool small hole upper receiver, maybe colt. Then they added a new barrel probably from a place like Model 1 Sales, and a new bolt carrier assembly, charging handle, and delta ring.
That's my guess.... pinpointing it would be really tough without any markings whatsoever.

The receiver looks like it was refinished at some point and upon close inspection doesn't match the barrel. I'd almost put money on it being a M16A1. I think I'll throw some SP1 furniture on it and proceed to see how many rounds it takes to wear out a HBAR.
Thanks for the help JE3146!

No problem... anytime... but I must warn you.. you're gonna have to put about 20k rounds through it to wear it out :D

I did find a faint 5.56 marked on the top of the barrel and what might be a W on the front sight block on the left side just behind the roll pin for the gas tube. I shot it offhand today at around 50 yards with Wolf 55 grn and it made the targets dance very well. I can't wait to get it on sandbags at a longer range and see what it can do.

aint a m16a1 upper cuz it has the wrong handguards and those things werent 24" long. Id go along with JE and say its a frankenstein upper build. But if it works and you dont care more power to ya.
