View Full Version : What else can I build?

Well? I see all of these other parts kits, but they are for Open Bolt Subguns. As far as my research has found I can't really build any of them (legally). What about the G3?, Fal, or others, are they resonable to build or do I need a degree in "Firearm Engineering"?

I think an AR or FAL might be reasonable. I think I'll do a Sten next. I have a parts list around somewhere to make it semi. What I won't like about it is there are no SBR in IL. So I'll need a 16" barrel for the Sten :(

You could try an AR-15, piece of cake to assemble, just put parts in proper place, headspace and go, People have assembled them in arround an hour or shorter. The FAL is a little more difficult but not much, barrel screws in, detremine headspace and get correct locking shoulder. The G3 involves some welding and precise alignment to do correctly, You could go the pistol route and build an 1911 or a SIG (not sure of the number saw on another board). You could get some of those subgun kits and design and build a semi (come up with a good design and make some money).

Sten? Semi auto? Enlighten me!..
About the 1919, how do I get/build a semi auto side plate?
AR's already in the planning, but they can wait, they are still easy to get.
FAL? Assembly only, like an AK?
I was gonna do a G3 until I saw that "precision welding" crap in my research...
Is there Semi Auto plans for a Suomo? I would love to build a firing one of those!

Well I am no master builder but I have built about 5 ak's
but I put together a couple of Fal's also, I say that would be a good build for you, after you do a little research you will find you will need a couple tools.
a receiver wrench and a tool to set the bolt gap. these tools can be purchased at a reasonable price.
I have also built a G3 you right it does require some welding but if you look around you can find someone in town to weld it, once you set the G3 receiver and trunion in correct placement, any good welder can do it, I had mine welded for $20

FAL builds are certainly manageable in the home shop, but you do need some tools- the most difficult operation is torquing the barrel to TDC at ~ 80-90 ft/lbs without rounding the skimpy flats on the barrel. I use a reciever block to hold the receiver while using a modified open ended wrench to turn the barrel. Others reverse the procedure by using a barrel vice while turning the receiver with a special wrench. To headspace you will need either a specialized guage or a set of common pin guages in an appropriate range of sizes (along with the GO and NO GO guages) to determine what size locking shoulder you have to install for proper headspace.
Any open-bolt gun, like the Sten or Suomi, is going to require extensive machining- read availibility of a lathe and mill along with the skill to operate them. The only way to make a legal semi-auto from these is to machine a receiver and bolt group that fire from the closed bolt, and also cannot accept the original full-auto bolt. I would also add that anything you make would best be submitted to the BATFE technical branch for apporoval...

What about a CETME?

The Suomi is gonna be a decent build. Over on weaponeer they have a discussion on building them and its gonna be pretty easy. Prexis/Sten makes a 80% receiver for them and the changes to the bolt they will do for you for $35. Its not too bad of a deal. Especially if you were able to pick one up from CFS for $20 along with another build. Im gonna love my Suomi when its done :)

There is a kit at www.semiautosten.com that was around $250 which included everything but the parts kit. Honestly they are a pain to build and it looks odd with a barrel extension on it. The design has some faults as well and the Yahoo Sten forum is actively fixing them, the only issue left was the hammer which has been redesigned and will be available soon. This is the only BATF approved design in the sub guns that comes in a kit form that I know of.
I'm getting burned out on AK's and probably will do a 1919a6 next, the site has already been referenced but it gets pricey.

The Sten conversion kit is not that great, id stay away from it myself.. your taking a throw away gun to start with and making it complex with a closed bolt.. and there guns are notorious for feeding problems...
Go with a 1919a4 kit... its not that expensive to build.. Ive got less than $750.00 in mine....

whats gets expensive is when you add the extras like an original tripod
belt loaders and original accessories... you don't need them...sure there
nice to have but not really needed..
You can set up a 1919 to shoot 3006,, 308,,and 8mm in just a few minuets
by changing barrels.. and 8mm ammo is dirt cheap...
