craigntx, I'm guessing you'll find a better selection of factory ammunition with either 2 3/4" or 3" shells. Also you might want to visit http://www.gunsnet.net/forums/showthread.php?t=254295&highlight=gauge that asks a similar question.

Apartment + Shotgun = 2 3/4 non magnum #6 or at most 4 shot (NOT BUCK). $150 is not bad for an 870 in good condition. ;)

Just be aware that you cannot feed it 3 1/2" shells unless it is marked on the barrel that it will take 3 1/2" (not sure but I thought the 870 magnums only take up to 3", at least mine does). 3" shells tend to kick noticeably harder than 2 3/4, and as stated above, for apartment dwellers, birdshot is the safest load to use due to the fact that buckshot will go through walls a lot more easily.

If there is only sheet rock between apartments I'd stick to #6 or #7½ low brass. You can always put buck into a butt stock shell holder in case you need it...

Is the barrel marked 3½" Magnum? ( :gruebel: Ultramag???) If so that is a heck of a buy!
