Which do you prefer, myself traditional is the way to go. Sure it may be more of a challenge and you might miss a deer or 2 becasue the gun don't fire.(happened to me before) but inlines eliminate the point of it.
So which do you prefer.

I have a Hawkins Plains Rifle and an Remington 700ML both in .54. IK like the accuracy of the 700 but the Hawkins is more fun to shoot. I use the 700 when the weather is bad though.

I prefer traditional. For the same reasons you said.
I have a Lyman GPR 50 cal percussion with an extra 54 cal barrel, Lyman GRR 50 Cal flintlock, and a Lyman plains pistol in 54. I have taken deer with each of them.

Traditional or inline
I have a Traditions inline .50 cal. The removable stainless breach plug makes it easy to clean. No hesitation when firing and except for the smoke, it shoots like a highpower rifle. Shooting the sidelocks are fun but cleaning them isn't for me, I'll keep the inline. Have always used loose Pyrodex, no powder pellets, would like to try the "Triple 7" or "Clear Shot", less smoke, less cleaning.

Traditional, I also have a Lyman Great Plains Rifle in 50 cal. I got it because it has no bright brass, I gave my Hawkins 50 to my best friend for his birthday. I have had this rifle for 12 years and it has never failed to fire, but last sunday is the first time I shot and missed a deer. I cant complain, it was my fault.

Traditions flintlock. Just found out that because of the 1 in 48 twist of the barrel, shooting sabots out of it sucks! But when I went with the patched ball...

well fellers, I'm old and old fashion, prefer the traditional sidelocks and underhammers. I have 2 inlines a cheap CVA and one that looks like a Remington rolling block rifle, I might add that these are the only store boughten rifles that I own. I have made many M/L rifles over the years and still havea few of them including a .54 cal. hawken made from an original set of plans-blueprints. haven't shot the inlines in3-4 years.

I only use flintlocks.
I gave away my last percussion rifle a couple of months ago. I had been using it as a loaner during ML season. Hadn't personally used it in years.
Flintlocks are charming for lack of a better term. They've got character. The first time I fired one I just about threw it over the bank. I saw the cock drop and felt the frizzen flip......then it looked like the whole back of the rifle blew apart. I must have jumped 5 feet backwards. I was hooked though.
The ones I have are handmade with all quality parts. I've never noticed a delay in ignition, they fire as fast as my old Lyman percussion did. Whenever I have to listen to someone drone on and on about how slow flinters fire I always flip my rifle over and fire it upside down. A good flintlock will fire before the powder can drop out of the pan.

I have done nothing with any of the three- traditional, inline or flintlock. Biggest reason is I don't anything about them. I know of a few ML'ers, and except for one none are willing to teach me anything about it. And the one that is willing, is about 300 miles away. So I pretty much chalked them up as elitists.
I had a chance to get an inline a few weeks ago. One thing I like about the inline, from what have seen and what little bit I know is the inline can take a #810 shotgun primer.

Elitists? Wow, I've never heard muzzy shooters called that before. I guess it's all in who ya meet.
I've been into muzzleloaders since I was about 12 years old. Most of the traditional shooters I've met are more than happy to do what they can to help. Check around a bit for a muzzleloading shooting club. I'll bet you'll get all the help you need.
Anything I can answer feel free to PM me.

I prefer the traditional Percussion rifle over the inline. That said I have shot an inline rifle that I built quite a bit and it's very accurate.
topolover, muzzle loaders elitists? Well I guess anything is possible but I've not usually found this to be the case. Then again I haven't actively participated in any muzzle loading club or national shooting for 10 year snow, kind of drifted away around 1995. Klinton made me do it, kind of been a self loading rifle and high capacity mag freak since then.
