Norinco Hunter. AK Action, milled reciever, takes Doublestack mags.
I had fired one before, and absolutley adored it, so I got this one.

New in box with all goodies.

I am tempted to chop it into a Galil clone.
It would require moving the trigger guard, drilling holes for the PG, adding US parts, adding a Galil Stock and PG, chop the barrel, and so on....

Does anyone know who can do this transformation, and how much it will run for the labor?

I'd torn if I should do it or not. I was swatting targets a looooong way off with it today. It's like a magic wand. That trigger is PHENOMINAL due to it's extended legnth, and increased leverage... The added benefit of the ultra reliable AK action, longer barrel for added velocity, and an conventionial inline stock, this makes about the PERFECT swamp/woods carbine.. I also like the fact that I can carry it hunting with a 5 Rd mag, but the added firepower of a 30 Rd mag is seconds away (Where I hunt there are a lot of dope growers, and it's SUPER NICE to be able to have a hunting rifle that can double as a "trouble" rifle)

Anyway, my overall impressions of this gun leads me to recomend this gun to any AK enthusiast, hunter who needs a super-reliable semi-auto, or guy who wants a buttkicking rifle without the hassle or "2nd looks" of a pistol grip (The gun is CA legal :) ).
I don't know if I want to chop it into a Galil or not. I may not. I am really impressed with it. And i'm not one of those guys who always write a good review, just becasue i'm stuck with the gun. If it sucked, i'd say so. This is a damn good little rifle.

I'm going to REALLY work it out for reliability and accuracy next week (500 rds), so i'll post another report then.

I swapped my extra HS2000 for it.

I have another, so I JUMPED at this deal.
When the guy told me he was willing to swap it straight across, gun for gun- I darn near burst into cheers! :D :D

I've wanted one ever since I first had a chance to shoot one. :D

HS2000???? How much does that go for?

My roommate picked his up for $350 and it came with 2-5rnd mags 2-30rnd mags, and a 55 rnd mag. It was a pretty good deal.... I want it!!

I paid $250 for my HS2000 NIB.

HS's went for $249 FFL for a while. They are a bit more spendy now since they aren't importing them anymore at that price, and Springfield is going to re-release it under a different name for $459.00 next year- I paid $249 for mine.

This one was NIB with all the acessories. I had a helluva time finding a Norinco Hunter for a long time, so this worked out real well. It really is a great little rifle.

"(The gun is CA legal )."

Nope, no "AK type" receivers :(. If it were I would have already made you an offer. How does that compare to a Saiga ?

So who sells these Norinco Hunters?

They look almost PC (except for that 40 round mag, Shawn).

frankly i don't like the way they look either, but the performance is awesome... nice long barrel, super accurate, and AK reliability!

Gotta love it!

I take it you've never seen a Mini-14?

Looks like a GREAT truck gun to me —Compact, not too threatening to the LEOs or civvies, uses the same AK ammo and magazines you already have...I want one too!

I don't understand why the Hunter is not Calif. legal. There is no pistol grip? I know one can buy a Mini-14, M1A in Calif. Did those Reds in Sacramento pass a new law banning semi-automatics that are like the AK? What did they do?

Not a new law, just the same one passed through on SB23 or 15. No AK or AK "type" receivers. Can't own a Saiga either.

I saw one just like it in local gun shop. I has been there for more than a year, maybe it is still there. I kinda liked it and was thinking about bying it but the mad release turned me off, that thing is just awfull. It is really short and hard to slide.
There are Norinco Hunter guns out there with regular AK release. I would probably buy one of those if I could find one.

Looks like McUzi got the good one with AK release but the other one that svr56 rommate has is the pain in the butt to get mags out off.

Volk, i think i know the rifle your talking about. and yeah those mag releases suck. i remeber it looking somthing like a SKS release, think maybe one of those extended SKS releases could be used? just a thought.
thanks

Not only is it a pain in the asshole, but I was using it as a rest while bench shooting one day, and the recoil of the gun rocked the rifle back and the mag popped out!!

Not a good thing..... I'm sure it's no big deal to fix, but i sure as shit don't know how to.

The rifle in question is the Norinco Hunter and imports of Chinese rifles were cut off in 1994. So you will have to find one on the used gun market. I found mine in the want ads of the local newspaper. I gave $300 for it new in the box with all the accessories. The manual that came with my rifle can be downloaded at
http://webarmory.ixworld.com/manuals/akmanuals.html
it is the Norinco AK Hunter manual.
Also check my home page for info on the Hunter rifles.

I had a hunter for several years, and I can say that it had the best trigger I have ever used, on a AK. I traded it about a year ago for a Bulgarian AK + 100$, so I thought that it was a good deal.

Positives: PC appearance, standard mags, longer barrel, Polytech receiver (386) at least mine was, and a sweet trigger.

Negs: Non standard parts, ie trigger, mag release, Choate stocks will not fit, etc.

I wish I still had it, but the guy still has it for 200$, so I may buy it back, after all, why not have 5 AK's in the gun locker:)

I own 2 of the Norinco Hunters and have converted them to a Pistol Grip form and the trigger is still the best I have every felt on an AK. It is not just the longer trigger but something else in the FCG that creates such a good trigger pull.
It is a shame I have to ditch the FCG for US parts.

The trigger has shorter hooks to hold the hammer back too, shorter trigger pull, but hey guys, shhh, I haven't been able to find one yet either!

I had one and yes they are a sweet shooter, very mild recoil and fast handleing as well. I would like to get another and scope it and leave all the rest factory stock. But there is one important place to check for a problem on any of these rifles: I had two NIB that had the front sight tilted to the left some 2 to 7 degrees.
I sent each back until they sent me one that was "indexed".
I have no facility to twist a barrel so I never attempted to correct it. And I think that with a standard 30 rnd mag, or better yet a drum, it looks fine. Can anyone say modern-day BAR??

hey i'm from fla also, gainsville area, had a hunter as my first ak great gun in all respects. very similiar in all ways to my vepr 2 but i consigned it out at a shop in dade city. i am trying to sell the vepr for the same reasons, namley esthetics and a current irrational love affair with the clssic ak look and handling which i guess most people on this site share. but for a combo light hunting weapon with "trouble" capability the hunter is tops. if i had that specific need i would get one without any qualms. 250 to 300 nib is a great price for a rifle that is every bit as good as a vepr2 and that is a compliment.
