Ok, this may sound odd. I shoot better with my M-44 with the bayonet extended. It seems to BALANCE out the rifles quirkiness when fired. I am go to take this weapon hunting BOAR, DEER and maybe...just maybe, if I can get the tag next year ALLIGATOR!!! I missed out this year on Gator due to work schedule, but next year I am going to apply for it. Well, back to the Nagant, I was firing some Russian Ball through mine at dusk, NICE signatures. My brother shot it for the first time, he's a lefty and he really liked it with the bayonet extended. A friend of mine said that we looked as if we were declaring WAR by shooting like this. He said it was very intimidating. I can just see it now... I go hunting shoot an animal approach it with my rifle, bayonet still extended. Along comes Mr. WILDLIFE OFFICER.... cause you damn well once that thing fires everyone in a grid will know were you are. So, my question should I shoot or hunt rather with the bayonet extended. Hey, no need for a mercy shot right? Well, hopefully the shot WILL be WELL PLACED to begin wiyh. Thanks 8dDUCE.

Some people say the M44 was designed to be fired with the bayonet extended, and is more accurate that way.
Does anyone else know anything about this?

It does seem to be more accurate, and HOLDS the point of aim easier. I like it, you guys should try it. Hey, stick some dogs and marshmellows on the bayonet, then fire instant range food. YUMMMY!!! 8dDUCE.
From what I've read on the mosin-nagant web pages the M44 was designed to be fired with the bayo extended. My to M44's are a little more accurate with the bayo out.

I've heard the same thing that the sights are regulated to having the bayou deployed and that it settles them down a bit.
Dogs and Marshmellows! Lead Poisoning! ;puke:

Yep, I read about this in my Mosin book. I usually forget to extend the bayo but I've done it once. It changed the POI from where I was hitting before I extended it. It was a little more acurate when it was extended.

AWE, come on... whats alittle lead??? Think of all looks you will get!!! You can shoot and eat, hell just bring some water and your ready for a shoot-a-thon. Besides with that blast you will surely cook away any nasties that reside in those items. AINT YAWL ever hear of RED NEK CUZINE?? Damn, out yandar hills at's th way ya do it!! Real ez like, don't even need a plate jus eat it rite off th bayonet!!! YUMMY!!!!!!! Would you like a side of CLP tp go. 8dDUCE.

Well THAT'S a neat phenomenon!
I've been shootin' this guy with the Bayo' folded feeding that "Heavy" (Silver and Yellow tip) 'X54 out of it.
Gettin' in the "Area" of 3.5-4" groups out of it that way at 100 yrds ("Just" acceptable for Our "Potato Wars").
Looks like I need to try extendin' it now.

8Duce', I'm really not sure guy?
It's a '53 "Something"? I took it in tade for "Services rendered" from one of My Bud's. I "think" it's Polish but, it might be a "Rooshin'" gun! (?)
Whatever, it's FUN!!!

8d- Tapco had the dog collar leather slings last month for $9.99 but they're not in the most recent catalog. They do list M91 straight stich slings for $14.99, I don't know if these work though.
Treadhead- A Russian rifle will have the Izhevesk arsenal mark 'fletched arrow in triangle' or more uncommonly the Tula mark 'arrow in star' on the top of the receiver. They also will have a hammer and sickle surrounded by a laurel at the top.
Polish rifles will have an oval 11.
Romanian rifles will have a unfletched arrow in triangle
Hungarian rifles will have an 02
Chinese rifles will have a three digit arsenal mark and probably a chinese character.
The only blonde rifles I've ever seen were Russian.

Maybe you could get George Forman to pitch it for you!
Call Tapco on the Dog Collar Slings, They might have some even if they aren't in the catalog.

8dDUCE, Lookin' at My '44 from the top there's:
02
1953
bk6930
There's also a tiny 6 underneath a small X between the date and the serial number.
Anyone know what "flavor" this is? Like I said, the gun's alot of fun to shoot and All it cost Me was drivin' My bud to the Battery store one night after a show when He discovered He'd left His lights on all day (Thing wouldn't take a jump).
It's turned out to be of those "dumb" guns that, even though you haul all the "Good" (And EXPENSIVE) stuff with You to the range, You end up shootin' alot more than Your AW's.

02 is Hungarian. That's the Hungarian arsenal mark.

I am formally withdrawing my idea of "THE NAGANT EZ GRILL." I was messing around at an undisclosed area, I put some dogs on the bayonet. Dude; it was just plain nasty. I think the shockwave of the blast really did it. You would not want to try this!!!!! It is rather messy. So, the idea is canned. 8dDUCE.

Yeah, my Russian M-44 shoots to the left with bayonet folded. Extended, it shoots to POA!
Just as a side note, I'm always suprised at how accurate my M-44 is. For such a little gun with such a short sight radius, I think the only other C&R gun in my collection that is more accurate is my Swede M-96.

If I was gonna be hunting gators, I would want the bayo extended! Maybe an AK as a back up too!

ummmm i was unaware that you needed a license to dipose of pesky big green lizards... ok so i was young.... and it was kind of hard to hit them between and below their eyes at night.... but damn dey is tasty :D
as to the m44 being more accurate with the bayonet out, think about where the bayonet is when its folded back, after ya put a few rounds thru the gun the barrel will heat up and the tension from the bayonet will make the shots wander. at least dat's the way i figured it.
