Im probably gonna buy a surplus rifle pretty dang soon and mount a scope on it for a nice little deer rifle. I like the enfield no 4, k98 mauser, and mosin nagant. im trying to stay kinda cheaper on the price scale, but i want an accurate rifle. I am going to mount a scope on whatever i get which leads to problems with the last two choices. anyone got any advice???

get a swiss k-31 nd forget the scope, although the ammo is a lil pricy

true...but im confused on how that whole little swiss action contraption works since i have never seen one and only read about them. Im really leaning towards an enfield with a 75 dollar scope mount and a variable power scope to at least a 15x. though the other two would be sweet if i could actually get the scopes mounted-real scopes none of those scout things. Im looking at making some long shots with the rifle of at least 400 yards.

400 yards is streching it for a SMLE, as is 15x. There are mounts made for both the MN and the Mauser. However the bolt handles have to be reworked. Caliber wise the way to go would be the Mauser. With Norma ammo. American ammo is loaded light. The 8mm Mauser is capable, in an accurate rifle, of connecting at 400 yards if you are. I would suggest either a fixed power 6x scope or a 3-9x at most. Good luck in your search and welcome to TGN. ;)

why is 15x pushing it. wouldnt you be able to hit something better if you can see it clearly? i actually am considering a mauser m48. seems like a solid rifle. which ammo is cheaper by they way? .303 or 8mm. or which one is easier to find?

Surplus wise the 8mm is easier to find. In American factory loading's both are loaded by the major ammo makers, reduced loads in 8mm and full power in the .303.

15x is pushing it because you would have problem with focas at anything under 150 yards or so. I have a 6-18x40 on my 24" AR traget/varmit gun, it rarely gets ajusted up past 10 or 12x. The field of view at 13x-18x is very small, and it can be hard finding the target. A fixed 15x would be a nightmare. There are a few fixed 10x on the market that would be better for your uses. ;)

This will take you to some pics of my sporterized Mauser VZ-24. The gun is currently being re-worked with an intergral suppressor but it may give you some ideas.

good luck with your project.
