I took out my M1 yesterday the first day of "southern zone" deer season here in New York. I loaded up a 5 rd clip with 220 gr "core lokt" ammo and headed to my deer stand. I use the heavy bullet as I hunt in an area of thick brush.

at 7:05 am a nice little buck headed right for my stand. I shot him once in the lungs. The deer colapsed and died without taking another step.

This is the second deer I have taken with my Garand. Both times one shot kills. I am not bragging about my shooting ablity ( I am not really that good of a shot) I am bragging about the M1's ability to stop deer right in its tracks!

 Way to go Zouave! How much did it weigh and how many points on the rack?

Seed and pojectile weight = energy! No substitute for these items when making a quick kill. The Garand can deliver these things if the shot is placed correctly. I better not say anymore or I'll start a SCHV vs. MBR debate! ;)

Around here we don't need to shoot em with rifles, just go for a drive at sunset and you'll hit one with a car. Passed a nice big 4 point somebody took out just yesterday about 2 miles from my house in the burbs.

The deer was a "unicorn", it was a one horned spike, dressed out at 120 lbs. Young and tasty :) !

BTW my wife saw an 8 pointer in my front lawn yesterday morning!

The deer population has exploded here too. Sunday night on the 16 mile drive home from my Dad's house I had 3 deer and skunk run out in front of the car. You have to be very careful at night.

Mine is USGI. I have had it for almost 20 years. You can see pic's of it in the Pick of the week - m1 Garand thread.

The Garand is my favorite rifle, but I don't know much about the new commerical models.

Great kill zouave! Hope you had your obligatory 1st venison meal of the season, fried backstrap!

If my C&R ever gets here, that's the first rifle I'll be looking for!

I too find my 1941 Garand to be very accurate. However, where can you find a 5 round clip? It 5 rounds the limit you can hunt with in your area or does it have to do with military rifles?

I have three 5 round clips for the gun and also a 2 rd clip. They are available commercially, I don't remember where I bought mine. Some people actually make them themselves out of the standard 8 rd. clips.

5 round clips are sometimes used by match shooters but probably mostly people who want to hunt with a Garand. I see you are in TN. One of the best competitor supply companies is in LaVergne, TN just outside of Nasville. They are named Champions Choice, phone was 615-793-4066. Haven't used the number in 2 years so the area code may have changed.

You can make a 5 shot Enblock clip out of an 8 rounder. It entales using a cutting disc on a Dremel tool. You have to mark off the area used by the 5 rounds and then make a slit about one round farther away on each side. Then you make a second shorter slit parallel to the bottom of the clip. Then you have to bend the tab you just made in to form a smaller pocket for the rounds to sit in. I saw a couple made this way at a shoot one time. Guy claimed they worked just great.

You can try making one that might cost you a buck to find out or you can pay the $5 to $6 bucks and get a premade one from a place like Champions Choice.
