FWIW, since it looks like the wait for re-importation continues and there is little hope of any aftermarket hi-caps becoming available soon, this is perhaps a partial solution:

The follower is cut down (leave just a bit of the raised portion molded in that stops the follower at the top of the mag)...

The spring, alot stiffer than is needed, is trimmed as shown...

And, the plastic locking plate the goes over the floor plate needs to get lost -it is just too thick...

And, the floor plate can be retained by use of a screw thru it's back to prevent it recoiling off.

This will allow use of 10 rounds reliably.

Note (WARNING): Trying to get 10 rounds (tightly) in the mag CAN be done w/o having to remove the locking plate or trimming the spring -it just will NOT work in the gun as the first round can not be depressed enough to allow the mag to lock safely...try to force this, and you may crack the mag.

P.S -You can increase the cap of the Saiga factory 7.62x39mm & .223 mags in a similar fashion (the 10 round 7.62x39mm mag will yield 15 rounds) but it is less significant as there are other hi-cap mags that can easily be used/adapted for use with these guns.

We are going to offer modified M14 mags for them. Tromix has them down and fully functional, and we are just waiting on a firm price. So even if the wait continues, the developement continues.

Saw that...interesting.

The top front sides of the mag looks like it had to get peened a bit, after some relief & before a catch added, to fit in the Saiga...

Makes me wonder about the "Thermold" .308 mags (M14/M1A1)? They are said to be a little temp sensitive -so, maybe they could be heat formed to fit???

Jus' a thought.

Lollygagger :naughty: (IF we could just get the damn Saiga mags at a decent price -we could make one hi-cap out of two of 'em easily.)

Well, I guess I found my long MLK week end project...

If a modified M-14 mag can be made to fit & function in a Saiga .308, which evidently is the case per the Tromix offering -I've got some mags and I'm gonna make it happen (one 20 & two 30's for the project).

UPDATE::

Yeah, played around with a 20 round military mag I roughed out -works.

Top front of the mag is cut lower 5/16" for 1" of it's length and has that portion "peened" in (tapering it at the immediate front)...

This narrows it & the "cut" relieves what is needed to clear hitting the trunnion. I just progresively peened it till it fit (vise jaws also were used to "pinch" some).

The follower, of course, required re-shaping at the front to pass thru the narrowed mag front (and the BHO portion can get lost).

A little finish tweaking, and, addition of the "hanger" and "latch" metal to lock it in the Saiga action -and it's done.

Nothing too difficult for a moderately experienced mag butcher. The "trick" in making the M-14 mag work, was the peening of the upper front part of the mag -I had not considered that till I saw a pic of the Tromix adapted one.

Lollygagger :cigarsmkg (after I get it all purty, I'll get a pic posted)

P.S -The M-14 milspec mag had alot HARDER metal than I expected! It made it a little more difficult to work on -but, leaves it nice & solid when completed.

Not to worry, Tromix...I'm not interested in making any but for myself (some of us do this stuff rather than cross-word puzzles).
