In position #2 it appears the 45 degree cut on the gas adjustment is in the bottom position allowing more gas to hit the pistons.
In position #1 the rounded end of the adjustment would restrict some gas from hitting the pistons.
If I am correct #2 allows more gas for lighter loads and #1 restricts gas for heavy loads like slugs. am I wrong? I dont think I am. papa

I'm pretty sure you are right as my 12 is on the 2 setting for reg 2 3/4 loads.

You are right. Keep in mind that the #2 position is screwed all the way in. I have seen two different guys say their guns are not cycling on the #2 setting because of this error. When I looked at their guns the gas plug was in the #2 position, but not screwed in all the way

If you are lucky enough, you could get away with always leaving it on the "1" setting.
I have read some stories of guys who havent really ever had to take their S-12's off of "1" setting..........Im one of those guys ;)

Yup, I shot it today. 2 3/4" , 7 1/2 shot. Shooting some clay pigeons.
Gas adjustment fully restricted on setting #1. No failures to feed or eject. It didnt throw the empties to far but positively ejected them without fail.
I threw in some 3" loads and they flew farther.
Mine is a SAIGA 12 19" cylinder bore choke. with the hold open device,
Boy its fast. Sure is great to shoot. Had I known, I would have bought a dozen at $269. Damn. papa
