1. I finally got a half decent pic of my lightning bolts. They are also on butt stock but not quite as deep. It took me a day with a wire brush to get the trash out of it. My mother-in-law was born in Germany 1932 and lived their through the NAZI Regime. She immediately recognized them as ss markings. Sorry Redstar. Thanks for letting me have your rifle

1. I stripped her down to check for more proofstamps. I got the buttplate that turned out well, then checked the under the receiver. I found the nazi eagle stamped on the above the trigger. I have been spending the last hour trying to get it in some kind of focus. I will try to get better pics in the daylight.
2. The eagle is has a 42 above it which I assume is the date of manufacture. I wanted to repost them both.

I love the history these old guns provide!
Weren't the SS mauser's supposed to be of higher quality than the normal run of the mill K98?

1. Each inspector had his own individual proofstamp. On regular issue their were tops four proofstamps. On the SS guns their were as many as 15 inspections. MY reciever shows around 8 proofstamps from each inspector, and the final eagle as finished. Then somewhere on the gun you will find a lightning bolt stamp if it was turned over to the Waffen SS and accepted.
2. Towards the end of the war only SS rifles recieved proper heat treatments and thus the recievers were of a superior quality. The regular rifle was acceptable but by minimum standards only.

1. Century Arms and I believe it was 90.00. I might add that each inspector had his own stamp. Being as how both mine and Whos to know had the same SS inspection stamp they were probably from the same batch. Unless he was extemely prolific in his job.
2. I cleaned the scum of my stock with Murphy's Soap and have a layer of Tung Oil drying now. The stock is being touched up with some reblue touch up to clean up the few rust spots that she had. I will post when completed.

1. My wifes uncle dieter used to work in a munitions plant toward the end of the War in Germany. He assempled the bolt actions. He was about 15 at the time. But he showed me these proofs when I was checking my P-38 and told me how they used to do it. The best quality was handpicked and sent to a line with the SS inspector. If they had a quota for him they made extra sure everything was right, hence so many inspections. His stamp was like an approval from god.
