I posted this question in another part of this forum but probably should have been posted here so here goes. Just bought the 16" plinker special from Oly and I was wanting to know what ammo do these guns like ? I also am going to shoot some ground hogs up to about 300 yards. Needless to say I will have a scope on it. Also is the 1" grouping at 100 yards that is advertised about right ?

Is it an early plinker with the cast receiver or later one with the forged receiver? The reason I asked is that I had one of the early ones that I gave to my daughter as a gift. After a couple of hundred rounds at the range, she started complaining that her groups were opening up. Then she stood up and said: "Dad, I think I have a problem!" The front of the upper had split from the rear, leaving the barrel still attached to a small nub from the front. Luckily the design of the AR made the failure a soft one, but it still was frightening. A call to Olympic, followed by the upper sent in for exchange went nicely. I am sure they were happy that I didn't threaten any worse. It was replace with a new style upper, but all the other parts were removed from the first upper and reinstalled on the new one. That was about 2 years ago and I haven't fired the rifle since.

The ammo that we used, and that I enjoy using, is Sellier & Bellot. Good stuff. In my Bushmaster, and the replacement that I got for my daughter, a competition Rock River, other than the S&B we have been using USGI Lake City.

Dont know what rate of twist your barrel is, so i can't tell you what would be the best grain weight would be, but 55 Grain ballistic tips are BRUTAL on ground hog sized game. this summer I hope to do some 300 to 400 yard shots on some varmits, I let you know how those ballistic tips do.

Mine eats everything I feed it, including the stuff that voids my warranty and the Olympic SS109 that doesn't work in anything. YMMV

One brand I never got to work was Winchester White box.
