I have a 24in heavybarrel AR15, its avg. group size at 100 yards is5/8-3/4, can anybody tell me roughly how far i can accurratly hit a groundhog sized animal. i am hoping for 350 yards.

The rifle should easily shoot at least MOA at that distance which would be all shots inside a 3.5" diameter circle.
The real question is.....can the shooter accomplish it?

Having shot with Gearjammer pretty regularly... Yeah... he can do it!

Thanks for the info about the moa on the of the rilfe, and as far as shooter capability, ask zoff12 about the time i hit a 2 1/2 gallon bucket at 235 yards with a ruger redhawk 7 1/2 in. barrel open sights. you sound like my kind of shooter, maybe some day we can go pop a couple varmits and you can see for yourself.

It's true. It happened right here on my farm.

Out here in the desert we have little squirrels about the size of your hand. I use a 20" HBAR A3 , with 52 gr Sierra HPBT's that reach 150-200 yds just fine.

That's some nice shootin. Congrats and let us know how the varminter runs at that distance. I would love to do some varminting myself one day.....unfortunately there isn't much call for it here in NY. :)

Thanks, thats one bullet I have not tried yet.
Yeah it was a lucky, oh I mean a good shot, I'm just glad I had plenty if people there to witness it. I'll let you know about varmit Bustin, I have got to go talk to my friend in Goshen VA. to see if he will let pop a couple on his farm, we would have shots out to about 750 yards, but like I said at first I only going to try out to 350 maybe 400 yards.

I think some people are just naturals at hunting.my confidence in shooting goes out the window at moving targets.. I prone and bench shoot at targets.but i just dont know about hunting.I hunt but I suck because I wont take a shot when I need to take the shot(well you could say im just being extra carefull right? :). well thats some nice shooting, and my final comment would be if your shooting small animals at that range i would recomend the fastest shooting load possible(as long as there is no wind)im not sure but with windy conditions you might be better off with longer/heavier bullet to battle wind at long ranges(if you,ve got the twist rate for it)...i dont know but i thought i would just mention it...

Thanks for the reply, you are right not to take the shot if you do not feel that it is a good one,It's better to say i got it than i think i hit it.I am a little concerned about wind drift, when I do go I going to try to pick the calmest day possible. My AR won't shoot the heavy stuff, I wish it would.

M700Police is correct in his assessment of the potential of the 24" rifle. You will need a lower twist rate(faster) to shoot the heavier bullets. With a 1 in 7 twist air gauged barrel you shoud be able to group 1.5" or better at 300m with 69gr Sierras handloaded for your rifle. My 20", 1 in 9 twist Wilson barrel will do 5" groups with 55gr surplus ammo at 300m, that's iron sights.

Thanks for the info. went out sunday and shot at 2 liter bottles full of water at 250 and 275 yards, even in the wind we had I was hitting every with every shot, 20 bullets 20 bottles. I can't wait for the weather to finally get warm and stay that way, So i can go after ground hogs instead of bottles full of water.

Try popping some golf balls at 300y. One of my favorite games with my precision AR. ;)

:ywoot Haven't tried that one. But I don't have a scope on mine yet. Sounds like a must do.

SWEET!!!!, I will try the golf balls at 300yds, but wouldn't it be more fun to hang them up and shoot the string, and then shoot the ball while it is rolling around. wat'ya think.

That would be fun too. I personally like chasing them around though. ;)
Pop!.....<balls flys in the air and lands somewhere else>.....Pop!

We call that ballistic golf. ;)
Its a fun game and it takes luck to win...
By luck, be lucky enough so the ball does not land in a depression, hole or other place where you can't see it.. :lool:

Hey there m700police, just thought you might want to know I just got my first ground hog of the year, shot took place right out the kichten window, scared the shit out of my wife, but i could not help myself, I have been putting out bait for this one for two days. the distance was 250yds one the button. my AR drove it home on the first shot, those ballistic tips do make a mess, but it was not as difficult as i thought it would be only had the scope on 9 power. the 400 yard distance should be no problem.

Number two hit the ground about three hours ago, add 20yds to the first one.

Not varmit hunting but this past weekend I went to a farm pond with a freind of mine and we had permission to shoot all the snakes and turtles we wanted. Just wanted to let you know I drilled a snake right between the eyes at 116 yards, that was messured with a leupold range finder. Not the shot of the year or anything, but I was impressed.

Nice set up!!
A couple questions.
Is that a slip on/pinned brake? Who makes it? I have a post-ban barrel, and I'm looking for a decent slip on that can be pinned.
How do you like the detachable front sight?
M700Police
02-16-2007, 12:53 AM
Thanks. The brake/collar is thread on and pinned, standard AR thread. That one was made by Adco Firearms.....it's a copy of the OPS Inc. 2 port brake/suppressor collar used on military SPR's. Adco does not make them anymore now that the real OPS setup is available on the civilian market.
The PRI front site (flip up, not detachable) is excellent. Very well built and the hood gives a fantastic sight picture in conjunction with an aperture rear. The picture is basically a circle within a larger circle with a center post. VERY quick for the eye to pick up.

I'm trying to find a slip on/pin for my Bushy 16" post-ban. I'd rather go that route than disassemble and have the barrel turned and threaded.
Bushmaster has a mini comp slip on, but DAMN, those comps are brutal (concussion)for the shooter and anyone close. It directs the blast rearward.
Anyone have a source for something other than that animal?
