I have recently been acquiring some used handguns and I've been using the "blue book" to decide if a particular gun is priced reasonably. I saw a gun that I'm interested in at one site that was priced at twice what the "blue book" value was and sent them an e-mail asking why is was so expensive. They replied that the "blue book" is only a guide, which response I've also gotten from a local dealer. My basic question is, since the "blue book" is sold to many people, how many rely on the values listed in it to evaluate their transactions? Is there a fudge factor to be applied to the values listed in the book? How many of you insist on sticking to the book and are successful in your sales or purchases? Thanks in advance for your advice.

TakeFive, the Blue Book Of Gun Values in my opinion should be used as a point of reference. There are factors beyond condition of the firearm that will end up determining it's selling price. Regional/local interest, the need of the owner to sell and the desire of the customer to buy are factors that can't be applied universally. The one factor that can be is condition. The author of the book, S.P. Fjestad, goes to great lengths to cover this issue so those who choose to use his book have a clear understanding how to go about rating any firearm they may be interested in buying or selling. The next time you're at a gun show take a look at which book most people are using as a reference for value. My guess it will be the Blue Book Of Gun Values. Just my $0.02.
