I'm wondering about the value of a Winchester Model 70 Super Express in .458 Winchester Magnum. The metal appears perfect and the wood has a couple of indentations that require reading glasses to see. They look like something you might do with a thumbnail. I'm also curious as to the age of it. If I read the right number, its G72423. I was looking at a Winchester timeline and it looked like it might have been manufactured in the 1990's going by the Super Express designation. Have cardboard box with barcode sticker.

garymc, I believe you're correct on your time frame for the Winchester Model 70 Super Express. My information shows this rifle being made from 1990-1998. The previous version of this rifle used the 'XTR' suffix in the model designation and was made from 1985-1989. The Model 70 Super Express was chambered in .375 H&H Mag., .416 Rem. Mag., or .458 Win. Mag. Those chambered in the later typically had a 22" barrel while the other calibers used a 24" barrel. Up through 1992 these rifles used a 'push feed' bolt system. From 1993-1998 Winchester changed to the 'claw extractor' bolt system. for a point of reference, the Blue Book Of Gun Values - 27th Edition lists the following values for the Winchester Model 70 Super Express:
100% - $730
98% - $585
95% - $525
90% - $495
80% - $460
70% - $430
60% - $400
Nationally, I actually see the Winchester Model 70 Super Express selling for $900-$1,500. Hope the helps!

I took it out and fired it twice today. Two different sized bullets. The smaller one kicked about like my Rem 742 30-06. The big one kicked harder. Not near as bad as I expected. I think it will be put up for sale.

If I did it correctly there is a picture of the bolt. Is it a claw extractor or a push feed bolt?

Looks like a claw extractor to me.

Oh, goody! That just raised to price a couple hundred bucks.
Thanks, Steve.
