The 7.62x39mm barrel, while certainly chromed, is a little different from the mispec barrel in that the chamber has a intentional ring to "mark" the fired cases...

Some sort of Russian gun control measure, I understand. Odd.

Thanks for the replies! Lollygagger that may be true but it looks more like a bad chamber to me.

That was my first worried response.
The importer, EAA at the time, verified that this was incorporated into the firearms intentionally by the factory. Some very early versions did not have such, and, it applies to 7.62x39mm chamberings only.

thats a strange feature! thanks for the info. I am interested in converting a 5.56 or a 7.62 to a pistol grip/hicap rifle. I have a sar1 and a couple of ar15's and a cetme. i used to have a sar3 and got scared of the rommy handling the pressure of the 5.56 and the sucky trigger group (no other after market fire control available at the time) and it beat the tar out of my brass so i let it go. if i go the 5.56 route the only misgivings i have is modding the mags. i would prefer that it work with stock mags.
O.S.O.K.

The mag mod for the .223 rifles is very easy and mine all work 100%. The thing you need to worry about is getting good .223 mags - the best are the weigers and they are going, going, well you get the picture.
I do have to say though that my bulgy 5.45 converted mags work fine and are the least expensive route.
Just go to the top of the forum and check the sticky - it has a link that shows how to modify the rifles and mags - if you haven't already ;)
My Saiga .223 conversion is a honey. So's my 7.62x39 and .308. The 7.62x39 is an Elite Firearms conversion and it takes standard mags. The .308 has just the 8 rounder so far - hoping for us-made 20 rounders soon!

The AK is rough on brass, most folks just don't notice. They really need a buffer on them.
I got a valmet buffer long ago for thispurpose -they are rare and pricey these days, but could be made. Basically, you just need ablock of rubber at the back of the port area on the receiver cover.
FWIW, I've used modified E.G bakelite AK74 mags in my Norinco 84S with very good results. The Saiga .223 would require a "bullet guide" to be placed in the action, of course.
