My 870 has developed a failure to feed issue that I cannot seem to resolve. The empty ejects fine, the new shell moves from the tube to the ramp fine, but when I try to slide the action forward, the ramp is too low, causing the nose of the shell to catch on the chamber. If I reach in from the bottom and push the ramp up a hair it feeds in, or if I rotate the gun counter-clockwise, it feeds in. This occurs with 2.75" shells, not so much with 3". I know the easy answer is to use 3" shells...LOL. Any thoughts? Thanks in advance.

you cant afford to feed it aa steady diet of 3"shells,at least i cant,is it an older model(guessing not with a mag rec).i remember them having probs, with the old followeres and were switching out to aftermarket ones that were orange in color(i think)

blobman-
I think its about 10-12 years old. It started life as an Express 870 with a wood stock. I will try the follower, they're pretty cheap, but I think it has more to do with the feed ramp.
Thanks.

Ok, notice how the carrier(I'm guess that this is what you were referring to as a bullet guide) is down, and the relation to the other parts in the trigger group.

Notice now that the carrier is up, and that the orientation of some of the parts in the trigger group have changed.
My guess is that either that the "finger" is broken, or that something is interfering with it's operation. Since the bolt depresses the "finger"(this lifts the carrier), and then something else(probably also on the bolt) grabs the "finger" to cause it to slip out of engagement with the plunger, the problem has to be with one of those two parts. It could be as simple as some gunk or dirt having gotten into the wrong place.
Disassemble it and have a look..and while you've got it apart, blast that trigger group with some gun scrubber to get all the gunk out. Be sure to re-lube everything before reassembly.

Excellent!!! Thank you very much for the info and pics. I'll pull the trigger assembly and check the plunger in relation to the elevator.

I had a small piece of a stick get stuck there one day while duck hunting from pond to pond in a nasty swamp. Same kind of thing happened.

No problem. Hope it's just gunk causing the problem and not broken parts.

Hopefully it's just gunk. Had one that did the same thing. Unfortunately my buddy wanted it more than I did (even after he experienced the jams) so I sold it to him before I was able to figure out what was up. Checked with him a bit ago and the problem just "went away". Go figure.

I hope I'm as lucky as your friend. I checked everything suggested by MachinistTX, still jams up...
