View Full Version : sniperized my Saiga .308

Posted this a couple of days back, but we seem to have lost some posts....
Well, decided that my long barreled .308 needed to be put into drag config, so decided to install an ATI stock - here is the result:
http://www.gunsnet.net/album/data//500/20500Saiga_308_left_side.jpg
Sanded and camo-ed the stock and handguard to match. Used Krylon ultra matt cam paints -black, od green and dessert tan.
I like the new look - more balanced with the long handguard and barrel. I think the standard pg and buttstock looks good on the carbines, but the long barreled version needs a drag type stock...

Other board or not, nice looking rifle. I wonder if your groups would improve with the higher cheek placement and longer stock.

Nice looking gun dude. Quick question. . .I am planning to "sniperize a .308 AK myself. I am looking at the Saiga and the VEPR, both in the longer barrels for obvious reasons. Tell me true. . .what's the gun group like at what distances, and with what ammo? I know what the VEPR can do, but the Siaga is the unknown quantity in the mix.
Please advise.
Thanks much.

Hey thanks. And its even nicer now that we are going to be getting 20 round mags! :D
As to groups- I get 2" groups at 100 yards with open sights or same with the POSP scope - no difference and this is with berdan primed Hertenberger milsurp. Based on that, I am betting that it is close to moa capable with handloads or match ammo.

So can you install that stock without gunsmithing? I have a long barrel saiga 308 and am looking to do something very similar.

Not that particular stock. Note the lack of space between the mag catch and the trigger guard. In the unconverted Saiga, there is quite a gap there. Izhmash makes a "skeletonized" stock for the Saiga line of rifles that requires no modifications to the rifle. It is hotly debated as to whether or not this violates the "sporting" classification of the rifle.

I have converted my 16" Saiga 308. The best group I could get today was 1 1/2" at 25 yards. First time shooting the gun and it was -15 at the range. Hopefully it will get better as the weather warms up., my eyes just don't see the sights like they used to. I need to put a longer stock on so I can use a scope. I thought of one of the Drag stocks.

I left mine in the factory stock, feeling I had enough PG stocked weapons...

I worked up a modified M14 mag before the FBMG 20 rounder hit the market.
I'd like to come by one of the new Saiga "dragunov" factory stocks to see what I thought of it -but, they seem to be only offered on complete guns. I expect this may change in the future.

Yeah.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v419/Lollygagger/Saigamag-1-15-06.jpg
The lower part of the aluminum G3 mag was cut and "lips" made to slide it into the bottom of the factory mag (PIC (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v419/Lollygagger/saigamagmod-a.jpg)ANOTHER (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v419/Lollygagger/saigamagmod-5.jpg)AND ANOTHER (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v419/Lollygagger/saigamagmod-8.jpg)).
The G3 follower & spring was used...the follower needs to be thinned on the sides a little and tapered at the front to go thru the Saiga upper (PIC (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v419/Lollygagger/saigamagmad-7.jpg)ANOTHER (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v419/Lollygagger/saigamagmod-1.jpg)).
Holds 25 rounds (cheap!).

Like the camo...
I wonder what one would look like with the front sight removed?

Here's one that I welded the front sight to the gas block

This is the Saiga 308 we built for my best friend.

Sweeeet!
Ive been rethinking more and more about my stance on the saiga...
I used to think they were ugly but the more I see pics of this style the more its starting to grow on me...
Something about the smooth barrel without the front sight sitting at the end just makes sense to me...
Maybe its the m700s that do it...

If you were to remove the front sight it would leave a weird turned down area terminating in a pointless taper.ie if you want a Carbine it wold be better to by the longer rifle and turn the excess off and give it whatever muzzle treatment you wanted rather than buying the shorter one already cut to length.
I am liking the idea of an 18" barrel myself and may go that route on the Saiga I am working on currently.
