I ran into what has to be the DUMBEST groundhog I've ever encountered today. I was told in advance that he was dumb. I didn't believe it until now. Two days ago, the neighbor who owns a farm got behind him running up the driveway. He didn't turn to the left or right sides when running away from the car, but straight ahead up the driveway. The woman had to slow down to avoid hitting him. She felt sorry for him being so stupid and couldn't kill him. I had no such pity for poor ole corndog. If I had been even remotely on my toes, I'd have busted him outright before he even had a chance. Unfortunately for me, he appeared right under my truck and ran dead ahead (as usual) when he locked eyes with me (I was so suprized he was right under my truck window that I turned and looked down at him right when he looked up at me). Here's the extra dumb part...
He ran into a large culvert and was too chicken to come out and take his medicine like a good little groundhog. I walked right up the the mouth of the culvert on the side of a hill and aimed right in and waited until he blotted out the light coming from the other side. I then shot where the light used to be. Ole Corndog is no more. I ain't proud of it because it was like going out and shooting someone's dog, but I thought the story would be entertaining at least.
Popped another groundhog before I got ole Corndog. He was 140 yards away and I picked him off with iron sights. Easy shot because he stood up for me and posed all pretty right in front of a huge bank for a backstop. Nice and safe and pretty as a picture when he took a bullet.
