i have decided that my next firearm purchase is going to be one of those russian vper rifle. I have a few questions and i know that i can find the answers here. first where exactly would the best place to purchase one be. i have seen them at tennesse guns and from robar arms, who i assume is the inporter. Second, is the carbine or rifle version the way to go? Third, does anyone have any other advise or warnings about this rifle. I appreciate all of your responces. Also am i correct in assuming that they are unaffected by the most recent ban? thanks in advance.

these are pretty sweet rifles. a bit on the heavy side (9 lbs.) and you can only buy 10 round mags for them (sort of expensive too-$30). as for accuracy, i'd say 3-4 moa is to be expected with military surplus ammo. 100% reliable and built much more solidly than the traditional ak clones. i don't know if classicarms.org (classic arms in charlotte, north carolina) still sells them or not, but i'd recomend classic any day. not much difference between the rifle and carbine. the carbine is a bit easier to handle due to shorter length, but you gat and extra 60-70 fps out of the longer rifle barrel, so it depends what is more important to you. good luck, sloth

I have the 20.5" barrel "Carbine" Vepr in .308 and I like it very much. I would have preferred the longer barrel, but the cash was burning a hole in my pocket and the price was right. My groups at 100yds.,iron sights from rest with FNM surplus ammo are in the 2-1/5" to 3" range, which is about the same as my Yugo Ak,which has the a similar RPK type receiver. I highly recommend it.

I have the longer barreled rifle and it has 500+ rounds through it so far without a single malfunction. The first 100 rounds through it were green corroided mil surp ammo that my friend gave me because he was afraind to shoot it in his FN/FAL. Well it ate it up and shooting from a standing position with open sights. It hit the 8" round steel plate at 124 yards every time rapid fire. So that sounds like deer hunting accuracy to me. I have the VOMZ P4x32 scope mounted on it now and will sight it in when it cools off,111 degrees here in AR yesterday.

Anyone know if a Vepr would take a Choate type Dragunov stock?

Don't know, but would think not. Standard Vepr stock is a very comfortable, nice piece of walnut that looks and feels good.

Classic Arms in Charlotte, NC has a couple Veprs in .308 in stock (I was there last week). Priced at about $500-$550. I'd buy it, but don't want the hassle of dealing with yet another calibre of ammo ;-D
Sloth - you going to the NC Shoot? Hope to see ya there.

I hope it's better than the Romanian Dragunov stocks http://www.ak-47.net/akcgi/frown.gif I haven't seen a Vepr loacl to try one and previous thumbhole stocks I've tried have been less than satesfactory.
As far as .308 goes, well I have a LOT of .308 right now and only a feable bolt action to shoot it out of. I was thinking a semi would help me shoot it up before it went bad http://www.ak-47.net/akcgi/biggrin.gif

Forgot to mention that the Vepr thumbhole is not ambidextrous; if your a lefty you'll have a problem.

warrior, no i didn't make it to the nc shoot. i'd have loved to, but i'm now living in indiana. i bought the vepr while i was still living in western north carolina.
something interesting about zdf and classic arms. at the nra convention this spring in charlotte, i was talking to the zdf/robarms reps. i asked them if classic was going to be carrying the new m96. they were not happy at all with classic arms. in fact they told me that they were done doing buisness with classic all together. i don't know what the problem was between the two. i've bought two guns from classic and in both cases i felt like i got very good deals from them. sloth

Have VEPR carbine. Iron sights read to 300 metres. The VOMZ scope is excellent and I highly recommend it. Since mounting the scope I don't use open sights.
This is a well-built firearm. The importer consistently states the barrel alone is worth $300. The walnut stock w/ pc thumbhole is comfortable, though designed for R hand shooting. Possible they should consider a L hand option.
I've put milsurp & Remington thru mine (147 gr) and been very pleased. Bought some heavier SP Winchester which would have requireed resetting zero. I wasn't in a mood for it that day so I'm still shooting the 147 gr.
The VOMZ sight has a range finding feature which also makes it attractive.
The only item I would change is to add an illuminated model of the sight for low-light situations.
I'm pleased. Sometimes I wonder if the rifle version would have been a better choice but the carbine is certainly more than sufficient for the terrain where I live.
I have spoken w/ the importer a few times and the carbine was the choice in Utah.
In reviewing the thread, M77B1 have you considered the scope? Try it, you'll like it. http://www.ak-47.net/akcgi/smile.gif
This rifle has a very solid feel to it and is enjoyable to shoot.
I'm pleased with it's accuracy.

Before you do anything, go to RobArms:
http://www.robarm.com/
They are selling Vephrs with pistol grips. These have US parts and are BATF legal. These are supposed to be very high quality.
The 7.62x39mm is selling for 550. The .223 is selling for 599. AND a 5.45x39mm is being imported later in the year (SWEET).
I have no idea what the .308 costs, but figure somewhere in there.
I wish I had the cash to buy one.

my vepr is very impressive. i would have liked a carbine instead of the longer bbl one but a very nice shooter. and for a .308 very pleasant to shoot. am considering the conversion to the p/grip buttstock, however the thumbhole stock is not at all uncomfortable.
damn mags are a little pricey though
