A Friend a work will be turning 18 in April 02, and he wants a sniper rifle. I am trying to turn him onto Russian hardware, but cost is a factor. Is the Finnish m-39 sniper from Interordance any good or should I tell him he should get a Mosin-Nagant 91/30 sniper insted.P.S. who currently has the best deals.

1. I have the M-39 and the M-44, both are fine weapons and at decent prices. I dont know much about the other one though.

Given the choice, I would pick the m39.

I would go with the M-39 also.I don't have one my self but that all I hear is how accurate it is.

Floating barrel.
Easily fits right in with the Swiss K-31 and the Swedish M96 Mauser as far as accuracy goes.
I'm crying because I just sold mine to a friend. We pulled it completely apart and it was built on an 1896 receiver. Plus, it had the VKT high pressure proof!
Be seeing you.

He's talking about the M39 Sniper model, which goes for about $399 I think. If it's like a standard M39 he'll be pleased. I'd get that over a M91/30 anyday. The Finns really put an emphasis on accuracy as compared to the Soviets.
8dDuce, there should be a little date stamp underneath the tang where the back screw (bolt) goes through. If you lift the barreled action out of the wood and look on the underside of that rear tang there should be a date there. Of course there's always exceptions to the rule, but I suspect it will be there...

Are the I/o offerings really snipers? I think they have simply added a mount to the M-39 and M-44. If you want a rifle for sniping and not a real deal authentic sniper rifle, than why not get an M-39 from WG&A and a scout mount from Darrell over at Parallex? You'd still have a very accurate, scoped rifle which has not had it's original state permanently altered, all for about $100 less.

IMO the IO M39 snipers are not authentic Mosin sniper rifles. The real deal is a 91/30 with PU 3.5 X scope.
The M39's have a PSO-1 SVD type scope on them. Now maybe the Fins did use this in a Post WWII capacity like back in the 50's or 60's, but I'm unaware of any information that would confirm this.
I'll say this about the M39's from IO if you want a scoped M39 this is a way to get it done professionally by the Fins. The PSO-1 scope is calibrated for the 54R round so although the scope is a modern one designed for the Draganouv (sp) rifles it should work well combined with the M39 rifles.
