The back window in my '87 bronco has stopped working-fortunately in the up position. I went to check the fuse and found that it is a rather large shiny metal thing instead of a flat plastic fuse.It plugs in just like the other fuses in the fuse box. It worked so well for so long that I can't assume it is the motor. Any advice?

get out the test light and trace it down.

probably a bad ground or rocker switch. use a test light at the motor connection. if no juice test the switch.

Not only do I collect guns, but I restore 4x4s too. The big metal thing is prolly a circuit breaker, there are hundreds in my Freighliner! It could be the safty switch which keeps you from opening it with the gate down. I'm guessing. Thats what was wrong on my Wagoneer.

I have to agree with Garimo.:chevy:

But seriously, if it has power and a good ground right at the motor, replace motor. :D

I have a 79 Bronco, no way I would trade down to a jimmy.:D
I take it the window won't work with the inside switch or the key switch. Check to see if you have current to the moter with the switch thrown, if so it's the moter, if not you need to check to see if you current to the switch, if so, it's the switch if not change that bracker. Mine is a fuse and I have had to change it twice.
