OK, why does the AK-47 have a threaded barrel tip? As far as I know, the 47 was not issued with a compensator/suppressor (not until the akm, right?), so what was the purpose in having a threaded barrel tip which would then require a muzzle nut, retention pin, spring, i.e. more complexity, something the Ak is not known for.

Anybody have any ideas? Chamberlin?

THanks!

Early models no comp sure...but how about a grenade launching muzzle device instead?
...an apple for the teacher? or a dunce cap if I'm wrong...

Aside from the fact that a standard muzzle nut can protect the crown (chrome bores remember) and be replaced if damaged, it also
provides the option to use a grenade launcher, blank firing attachment (for training), and any other muzzle devices that might come down the pike. I guess somebody actually planning ahead for once. Don't know
if it was Mikhail or the Gov't who spec'd in
the threading though... Ekie, Tantal???
Ned, there will be no dunce caps here!
