That would be an arsenal refurbished M44. During the refurbishment process many had a new bolt fitted and stenciled or electropenciled with the rifle's number. Thus, that bolt is not the first bolt that rifle had, but is original to the rifle since refurbishment.

I have a couple like that and I have a couple others that have original bolts.

To The Big CA, I have an M-44 with a penciled bolt, just shot it today. I was getting 3 inch groups at 100 yards. The wind was really strong from the east, so I am pleased with these groups. I was using the Spam Can Ammo from Classic. I had 4 dud's out of 100 rounds. I was alittle disappointed with that. After 96 rounds through the M-44, I am alive AND well. I shot ALL shots with the bayonet extended. Do not forget to CLEAN the bayonet off GOOD!!! My brother " Meat axe" was there also. I got some GOOD "BUMPS" with the SAR 1 and 2. I love my M-44, I shoot it more than the rest of my rifles. 8dDUCE.

That's what I wanted to hear about the rifle. I've had that many 40 S&W duds in a 50 rd box of PMC, so I guess that's not too bad. This rifle is a must. I want something I can shoot/reload for(?), and the price is great.

Meat axe. :) I know I already like that guy, sight unseen, but I do have a wicked imagination. LOL (I remember this old Molly Hatchet album cover).

Was going to shoot the SAR-1 today, but, I got lazy, and the wind was blowing rain sideways at 40 mph pert much all day. It's an hour's drive to the range.

The M44 is a definite.

Oh yeah, guys, and I think I just have to get an Enfield Jungle rifles, but that's at the bottom of the list right now.

Yeah, I'd say they're fine. If the Commies went through the trouble of numbering (or renumbering) the bolts; the probability they fitted them correctly is high IMO. That's just my opinion, but it's logical. If they didn't care, they would have just slapped on a non matching numbered bolt.

I never had any problems with my stenciled bolt rifles. I have one that the bolt is virgin, meaning to say that the bolt was never numbered until it was penciled. I have another where you can see grind marks, so that was a numbered bolt that they ground down and renumbered.

I've got other Mosins that I use non matching bolts on from different rifle types and nationalities, no problems on those either. I have a M91/30 with a Hungarian M44 bolt on it and it shoots around 2" all the time. No problems with split shells or snags either.

To date, I've never heard of a Mosin with headspacing problems, nor have I seen one.

Beauty of a rimmed cartridge - very forgiving on headspace!

Love my M44 Russian. That thing is an animal!

I got two M44's today, as I posted...matching reciever, bolt, and floorplate...appears to be original not scratched on...I would guess these are original/new/old/ riflles..one is dated 1944 the other is dated 1946..reddish colored stocks, not the blonde ones that i have seen pics of..very nice rifles all the way around..now to find some cheap ammo!

Get some of the Russian 85 or 86 dated in spam cans. Around $40 for 440 rounds. Very mildly corrosive. Reasonably accurate. Silver Tip is reported more accurate but I am not certain of that - seems similar in my gun. A sniper grade is around as well (in cans) but it is VERY expensive. Wolfe makes it as do several commercial ammo companies but that is EXPENSIVE too. Soft point available for hunting, can't remember by who. Will go look if you need me to.

Tracer, AP, APT, APIT etc is available but pricey.

http://www.mosin-nagant.net/i3tro4.htm is a link to Tuco's web site / ammo headstamp decoder - a real gem!!

Lay in several of the spam cans for SHTF and a little of the high priced sniper stuff or commercial for when you are on an accuracy kick.

Part of the fun of these is you can shoot till your sholder falls off for less than a trip to the bar! Same way with a Mauser!

Enjoy!

i just bought a Russian M44 at a gunshow sunday and all of the numbers match. stamped numbers, not electropenciled. stock, floorplate, bolt, receiver, etc. all match. almost 100% blueing too. i got it for $60. the seller had about 30 of them. i checked through all of them and found it. i guess im lucky. so would this be an arsenal refinished???

thanks,
jeff

Could be. Also possible it was never issued. In any event, sounds like a nice shooter!
