This will help many of you new comers to the Saiga rifles series.A factory Saiga rifle is an imported rifle that takes a proprietary factory mag.The S-308 uses an 8 round mag,the S-7.62x39 and S-223 use a 10 round mag. There are no factory "hi-cap" mags for these rifles. All of these rifles require modification of some sort to allow the use of "hi-cap" mags.Adding a bullet guide and modifying the mag catch for the S-223 and S-7.62x39 to use other hi-cap mags such as Weiger .2230,Bulgarian Waffle .223 and 7.62x39 mags and standard AK steel mags.
Some have converted Galil .223,and AK74 mags to work in their S-223 rifles.Doing so without replacing the countable imported parts may get you into trouble. There have been some conversions that uses modified mags from other rifles, most of these still require some modification to the factory rifle and mag to feed and function properly. If you want a factory Saiga rifle and still be able to use a "hi-cap" mag then you will need to replace the foreign parts with US copies to be in compliance.
The Saiga rifles have 11 countable imported parts, not including the magazine and it's components. With the magazine you have 14 countable parts.
The countable parts in an unconverted Saiga rifle are:Trunnion,Barrel,Receiver,Butt-stock(1 part),Hand-guard(1 part),Bolt carrier,Bolt,Gas piston, and the FCG(fire control group;which consist of the hammer, disconnecter and trigger).Magazine:follower, floor plate and mag body.
Depending on the magazine used with the S-223,and S-7.62x39 you have to get down to 10 or less imported parts to be in compliance with 922r.A US made magazine will require the replacement of (1) imported part to be in compliance.Using a foreign made magazine and you have to replace (4) imported parts.
There is only one US made "hi-cap" S-308 mag being made at this time and IMHO ever.Fuzzy Bunny Movie Guns or FBMG makes a polymer 20 rd mag that counts as (2) US parts;mag body and mag floor plate. They use imported followers and springs.Using these mags will require the replacement of (2) imported part to be in compliance.
What are the options?Replace the butt-stock,hand-guard,hammer,disconnecter,gas piston are the easiest to replace in the S-308,the S-223 and S-7.62x39 require a little more skill.By far the S-308 is the easiest Saiga rifle to bring into compliance.
Much of this information has been pulled from other sources and I hope this helps many of you out there.Gunsnet member O.S.O.K. should be given much of the credit.Without his input and knowledge this post I would not have even made this post.
