Dear Fellow Members-Took her to the range and elevation was dead on.She was shooting to the right about 4-6 " ,which I corrected.Does NOT like the Albanian ammo and even some of the Russian Copper Wash!I have never staked an early M-44 and am wondering how to do it or if I need to do it.I did notice two small "V's behind the globe near the sight base. Are these staking points?I really do not want to stake at the front of the rifle. What are your opinions on this?DO all of you stake regardless,or just if the sight is loose? All input greatly appreciated!:)-Gearhead

Dear SRV and Big CA-Was not trying to be cryptic-Staking is just taking a center punch and slightly indenting the metal where the sight globe meets the base.I guess you could call it punching, but I always thought that implied making a hole.Correct me if I am wrong.Any answers to my original question!Take care all:)-Gearhead.

I'm still wondering why you would do that. Is the original sight off or something?
Hmmm

Dear Big CA-I had an Allegheny Arsenal M91/30 that shot about 1 foot high until I drifted in a .030 over stock length sight post made by Fragger.I've had to drift almost all of my sight posts to correct deflection.Staking is an old way of preventing nuts, screws, bolts and sights from moving. You can see it many times on Turk mausers on the receiver bolt heads. The CZ-52 Hammer pivot pin nuts are frequently staked. You can also see it on M-44 and SKS bayonet screw ends. It's an easy way to tighten up a loose sight or prevent one from moving once you've sighted it in.Of course, you're damaging the metal,so it's not the most cosmetic repair-but it works! In frustration I restaked a CZ-52 hammer pivot pin nut ,after the lock-tite failed-and it's still holding.Hope I'm not being redundant here.Don't ya'all ever have deflection problems with your babies?:)-Take care all:)-Gearhead.

But you can see staking on many of the Turk Mauser and Russian Mosin-Nagant front sights.Any other stakers out there with input on the how-to with an early M-44 front sight?:)-Gearhead.

The original stake marks are located on the front of the sight. Actually they are more of a horizontal line. So I would restake the sight on the front.
I've never done it so I'm not sure the best way to do it.

Dear Redstar-This baby has never been staked!Otherwise,I would restake the original marks!I agree, the front is where to do it!Have staked before, but am leary of this baby since she is so petit and never been staked-She just has the original center scribe line on the front. Will wait and see if she stays put.Take care all:)-Gearhead.

Thats what I was refering to is where the lines line up. Most of mine have a stake punch dimple at the bottom of the line. So I'm under the impression they had it sighted in, marked the line(s) and then staked.
Those sight assemblies usually take alot of force to drive out if they're staked.
Good luck.
How was the bore on that rifle? Forgive me if I missed a reference to that.

Dear Redstar-The bore is mirror bright!Discovered from Mosin-Nagant.net that the two small inverted "V"s on the rear are the factory stakes to hold the sight in.The vertical line in the front is just a scribe to give you reference when drifting the sight globe to correct for deflection.I have seen the Russkies take a center punch and stake the front of the sight where the base meets the sight globe. M/N.net people said to leave her alone if she holds and she has not drifted since I've taken her out two times. Now if I can just discover if Century still has that EG &.62 x 54R sniper ammo.Supposed to be pretty accurate:)-Gearhead.
