took it shooting yesterday. it shoot really well. not as loud and not as much kick as my 1903s. a very fun rifle though. my friend wants one really bad after shooting it. accuracy was really good i guess. it was shooting way high at 100 yards, but on the 200 yard range it was hitting dead on. we were mainly shooting at at 10" gong at 200. next time we are gonna put up some targets and see what kind of groupings we can get.
before leaving. i ran some patches with windex though it about 5 times. the patches came out almost black!!! i guess it was because shooting it broke up some of that darkness in the bore, because after looking through the bore, it looks much nicer now than before i shot it. i ran some windex patches over the bayonet and the bolt face. i let the windex "soak" for the ride home(about 45min). cleaned it all when i got home, then put some US military oil/lube on the exterior and some in the bore until i decide to shoot it again.
i was very pleased with the rifle. an excellent buy for $60. i hope i cleaned it right.

Thanks for the report. I'm looking to make my first C&R purchases (just got license but holding off so I'm home when they come after Christmas) and the wrapped M44 is on my list. Looking forward to it!

the M-44 shoots 7.62x54r. the r stands for rimmed. i bought ammo for $90 a case(880rds) from a show here in atlanta last week.
fun rifle.

For the record, I made my first C&R purchases today. I ordered a wrapped M44 and a Mosin (plus the $10 hand pick fee - the poll was split down the middle last I looked on the thread so what the hell) and a case of ammo. They both fire the same round - the 7.62X54R so that was convenient.
Next, I'm going to get that MAS commando and an 8mm mauser.
I thought the R stood for Russian! I am a C&R - :newbie:

If I don't get off of the computer soon, I'm going to order the M44 and the Mosin from AIM. I keep telling myself that I can't afford them and that I don't need to stock another type of ammo. On the other hand, those wrapped M44's look nice and they're only $70. I saw one at a show two weeks ago selling for $300!
And Homer, have you checked on the availability and price on ammo for that MAS? I was looking at it too, but found that the ammo, when you could find it, was very costly. I think I saw it on Ammoman for $80 for 100 rounds.

They sure are, and I couldn't be more pleased with them!
I bought the dog collar slings at TAPCO.

Zouave, did you refinish those stocks or is that the way they came? If you refinished them, what did you use?

All I did to the stocks was rub some lemon oil on them.

Hey Zouave, I don't see any $30 M44's on AIM's site. Is this something you have to call and ask about, or am I too late (as usual).

Hmm, can't either, but I'll be tickled to get the in-wrap ones.

Actually I haven't done much research on the ammo but asked about it a while back... I'm sorry to hear it is so costly. Perhaps as these guns are bought & demand for ammo goes up, more will be imported and price of ammo will drop... If I do get it, it will be a showpiece and investment I guess - to be shot only occassionally. Damn that's expensive! :(

Unfortunately I don't see prices really coming down. Mas 36's have been coming into country for quite a while, about 10 years ago you could get new in wrap Mas 36 for about 99 bucks. Then we had the Mas49 semi autos come in the last few years.
I think the 7.5 French round will be like 7.65 argentine, 6.5 swedish and maybe the 7.5 swiss. Available but expensive.

7.5 Mas ammo can be had for $250 per 500 shipped. From www.coledistributing.com That's the cheapest I've found and their stuff is new production reloadable.
