I can't seem to figure out how the forward barrel band comes off.

I don't want to force anything so I thought I'd ask here.

This is on a Turk Mauser...

Thanks for any help y'all can offer!

Dear Redstar-There used to be an excellent photo description of this removal over at Mosin-Nagant.net.I have never done it,but you need a small C-Clamp and some wood shims.Basically, the bottom rectangular tongue behind the band or nosepiece must be compressed immediately behind the band with a clamp, using the wood shims to just touch and compress the leading edge of the metal while not touching nor marring the wood.Of course, you would want to use a small slice of wood on top to spread out the force of the clamp and not mar the wood.Gently compressing this tongue should eventually allow you to pull the nosepiece forward and off.I would think twice about doing it,however,if you don't have a screw but the cheesy brad used to secure the rear barrel band.If there is a brad, and not a screw, you may break the brad .The previous owner of one of my Turks drifted the brad out and loosened it when redrifting.I had to repair this $50.00 Turk and put a small amount of JB weld on a chromed screw while inserting it and self tapping the hole before screwing it all the way through.Could have been a darker screw, but this is a shooter and it holds!.BTW,if you use a greenie-wienie and the Natchez Solution, you can replenish the wood oils and clean ALOT of that Cosmoline and accumulated dirt out of the wood w/o refinishing the stock. The Natchez Solution is found at better hardware stores and is a proprietary blend of natural oils that feed the wood.My $1.00 worth:)-Gearhead.

Thanks gearhead! Since my post I found that photo essay at Paralax's board. I don't have a C clamp handy right now, I think I'll just leave it be. I didn't have any problem with the lower band if you just tap the back of the spring down a little it sticks and you can slide the band right over the spring.

This is a Century VG Turk Mauser. These came with no finish on the wood. It's rough and dry but I think I can get around having to take off the stock for now. I need to get a C clamp.

Here's the link to the instructions in case anyone else was curious.

Well I have to admit I had the right idea, I just wanted to make sure. Better safe than sorry. I was pressing down as hard as I could and trying to tap the band up, but no way can you do this by hand!

Thanks for the vote of confidence neilwest!

Dear Redstar-Just sent you the link to Paralax's page!:)I cannot say enough about The Natchez SOlution.I used it on my $150.00 Turk from Allan Schisel and not only did it replenish the oils and remove alot of dirt, but brought out the natural tiger stripe pattern of the wood.Mind you, this is just a plain greenie-wienie and NO disassembly! You just rub and rub (and rub and rub) and let sit for 3 or 4 hours and then wipe off!Kinda hard to find, but this is the BEST stuff I've found for replenishing wood oils if you don't wanna us Tung Oil,Linseed,Varnish,Shellac ,Polyurethane or some other finish-Gearhead.

C clamp we don't need no stinking C clamp. Remove the cleaning rod and take a hammer to the hunk of steel where the bayonet mounts. It worked for me anyway:)
